Northeast tropo 5/30-5/31

nd2023

Banned
There was tropo all day on the 30th that persisted until the 31st. What was remarkable is that I was getting the Boston stations in New Jersey at 1 in the afternoon, when usually tropo fades at that time. I never had 300 mile tropo at high noon before. It flipped directions in the evening and brought in the Richmond stations, including 1 in HD, Q94.5. I haven't had such strong reception of the Richmond stations since 2010 (well, of course I had strong reception of the Richmond stations earlier this year when I was driving through Richmond, but that doesn't count)

Here's what I got

Being further inland and away from Beryl, I didn't see nearly as many results as you did. However, here north of Farmville, VA, I can tell you that tropo from Norfolk and the Outer Banks persisted throughout the day yesterday. In fact, I am still receiving those signals this morning. There was slight ducting from Washington, DC, a little bit ago, but that has since faded. From my location, there is good line of sight to the Outer Banks transmitters without interference from local transmitters. Having a directional antenna always helps!

I was just complaining that everyone else was getting all that tropo and here in Central VA we were quiet, then Boom! The dial lit up yesterday and last night. Here is a brief list from my bandscan around 11PM through 1:30AM:

87.750 TV sound, probably from Eastern Shore of VA ( I think there is still one analog station out there.)
88.3 WRAU Ocean City MD with RDS
92.9 WVBW Hampton Roads
93.7?
95.1?
96.1 with RDS showing Foo Fighters Arlandria. No ID
97.3 WGH Newport News VA, null to WENJ Millville, NJ ESPN
97.7? Playing the All-Nighter show, null to The Rocket Mechanicsville, MD
97.9 Baltimore, MD
102.7 Jack FM Baltimore, MD, null to religious talk station
102.9 WKIK Mechanicsville, MD
103.3 WESR Accomac/Onancock, VA
104.9 Country
106.9 Classic Rock, no ID
107.1 WTDK The Duck, Federalsburg, MD
107.9 Spanish from Northern Virginia

Lasted well into late morning this morning, and is all but gone now.

I didn't get a chance to hear any tropo, but the Spanish 107.9 is most likely to be WLZL in Annapolis, MD. That station used to be on 99.1 over there.
I know that there is a 95.1 in Charlottesville, but if you heard contemporary Christian on 95.1, most likely WRBS Baltimore and the 93.7 either Norfolk area or Wilmington, DE.

96.1 was likely Norfolk's alt rocker 96X WROX-FM Cape Charles

Here in Fredericksburg we got tons of Eastern Shore stations and South Jersey with no problem. Couldn't pick up DC101 here last night from the tropo...found a better rock signal in both WZXL in NJ and WROX-FM!

Some stuff from coastal NC...best one was a snippet of WSFL/New Bern 106.5 over a fairly-local WBTJ/Richmond

Any idea what time specifically, WROX has a good index of songs played listed online here:
http://wrox.tunegenie.com

At 11:56PM on May 30th they played Foo Fighters Arlandria.

Spunker: That'd be about the right time, although the song wasn't actually playing when the RDS showed the title. Given the conditions though, I'd not be surprised at some discrepancy.

radiox: I didn't get anything from NC at all. Or at least anything that ID'ed as such. Plenty of Delmarva stations though. I am about 40 minutes west of the 'Burg. I didn't realize that 96.1 broadcast from the tip of the Eastern Shore. That seems like the most likely candidate. Funny, I was picking up 99.1 WNEW like it was next door, but many of the other DC stations were hard to drag in at best. Aren't they closer to Baltimore, though?
