Northern Monmouth Transmitters

I've been meaning to ask this question ever since I see these sticks right off of Route 36. Noticed a handful of transmitters all across 36 in Northern Monmouth, but not sure if they are repeaters for the NYC stations, or old rescinded transmitters. The only one I know that was a rescinded transmitter is the one in the Atlantic Highlands. I do notice that frequencies like 95.1 and 103.9 air dead air or a cd skipping sound. Any idea what are those sticks used or were for?

Just a guess- the tower that you saw in Atlantic Highlands might have been the brief home of WWZY/107.1 in Long Branch. Big City Radio moved WWZY's tower there in an effort to become a NYC-rimshot back in the early 2000s- simulcasting the 107.1 in Briarcliff Manor, NY. This was during its country and Spanish Tropical music days. It didn't work- they went bankrupt in 2002 and the station was sold to Press Broadcasting. Press took it off the air until they could move the antenna back to its original home in Long Branch and its been there ever since it came back in 2003.

There are no authorized 95.1's or 103.9's in Monmouth County, so if you are hearing anything on them they are most likely pirates. The closest licensed 95.1's to Monmouth are WZZO/Bethlehem, PA and WAVY/Atlantic City. The closest licensed 103.9's to Monmouth are WPPZ/Jenkintown, PA and WFAS-FM/White Plains, soon to be Bronxville, NY.

Hope this helps..

Just so your list referring to 103.9 out of PA and up in Westchester was inclusive, I just wanted to add this station into the mix as a fairly regular catch in Monmouth County namely close to the shoreline in the summer and during certain atmospheric conditions... 103.9 WRCN from Riverhead on LI.

;D

That would be the 106.3 half of Thunder Country.

And a few miles south on the Parkway past the Asbury tolls near the Jersey Shore Outlets is 94.3 WJLK and a few miles east of WHTG-FM in the center of Long Branch is 107.1 WWZY.

This is true...I have picked up WRCN on the GSP from about Exit 63 north to Exit 117 very clear......Others like 103.1 WBZO, 101.7 WBEA & 104.7 WELJ have also come in quite well......I have even got 107.1 WLIR down in the New Gretna area for awhile before WWZY kicked in.

Unfortunately, I am able to get what is called "Blaze 103.9 The Fire Switch" pirate out of Brooklyn from my commute. But for some reason, 95.1 in that stretch of 36 is completely dead air, and a STEREO pilot is on. Speaking of catching Long Island stations, I manage to get WBLI 106.1 almost every week and the occasional Party 105.3.
