You will notice that there are quite a few U.S. television stations on the list above.
Canadian cable companies were not required to remunerate those stations for their
content. The cable companies would steal the U.S. content and insert their own
commercials....... This went on for years!
 
This was also before the Cancom satellite made Detroit stations available nationwide (as well as CHCH Hamilton, CITV Edmonton, BCTV Vancouver and CFTM Montreal). Many of those U.S. affiliates would get replaced by Detroit stations, including in Thunder Bay. By 1986, Duluth was off Thunder Bay cable and Detroit was in. That had to have been hard on WDSE, which judging from a 1984 pledge drive I saw on YouTube probably depended on Thunder Bay viewers for a portion of their pledge funds.
