Not a thread -just a sabatical-- we digress

Been watching, been contributing, been hoping for some life blood on these boards.

BUT..I only get what you're seeing (talk, sports, talk sports, talk sports) The end result of radio.

If that is the radio salvation, so be it.

In the meantime...I shall read in the wings...and hold my fingers from the keyboard (used to be "hold my tongue"- but how times have changed!!)

I enjoyed these boards once, if not for quality interjection...at least for a sword fight or two. I believe I shall not be the only to go into hiding ...hence I wither away...only to appear when a REASONABLE "good fight" shall appear..one that brings the TRUE medium to bear. :'(

Respectfully to my brother/sister posters:

I think that while it has and will continue to change.. radio is alive and well.

The only thing that will never change is that radio is a business before it can be anything else.

In the old days wasn't radio often seen as a service first and a profit center second? I used to hear of stations that were tax write offs.

In the 1930s radio was an "innovative new technology" loss leader/profit drain for newspapers and radio stores. Kind of like HD radio or streaming is today.
Later on, say into the 1950s and beyond, up to the early 2000s, if a station was still a loss leader, then it was because of the owner's ego, and probably deep enough pockets from other businesses.
In some instances, like a family ownership, the radio station might have been the only business they had, so, lacking any other options, they hung on.
The "good ol' boys" usually kept at it as long as they could, before dying off and/or selling out to become filthy rich [when before, they were just filthy ;D ].

Even if they were only running it to lose money, that still means their management was based on profit (or intentional lack thereof).

There are probably a few nationwide exceptions to that rule, but by and large I think that's how the profit-motive-of-radio-thing has worked out. There's always some point at which the profits get completely drained.
