Not Again, Star 94

I heard a promo on Star 94 for another "Live In It & Win."

This is the 4th time that Star will have done this contest. The first 2 times were about 9 years ago, in Dan Bowen's original halcyon days. They started with the contestants living in a Volkswagon at North Point Mall. The contest attracted a tremendous amount of interest.

They did it again last year, and it just wasn't as good, in my opinion, nor did it attract that much attention. They changed it to a reality contest; listeners voted people out of the car. And they condensed it. I don't think it did much for their ratings.

So now it's back for the summer book.

I think they are trying to connect it to the whole "reality show" fever w/live webcams inside the car so that listeners can take a peek at what's going on online. But even though there's a glut of reality shows on TV, I have no clue whether or not they bring in ratings. Last year Star named the contest the "Wheel World," but I think the Real World already had about 10 seasons under its belt by then. I really wish they would challenge themselves with new, innovative ideas and give the other shows (especially Bert's) a run for their money.

Not again, indeed.

What's next?

The return of the WSB Secret Sound (trying to guess the gizmo that made a particular sound, like a candle wick trimmer)? Oh, I forgot, Cox only does contests during books when they need to slam CC for doing nationwide contests.

How about the WQXI Summer Jam (trying to guess the snippets of six different songs played together over the course of about one second)?

Or that 96 Rock contest where people tried to find the wackiest place to hang a homemade 96 Rock logo banner (and keep it up)?

What about Kicks' Georgia Lottery ("A LOTTERY!?!? IN GEORGIA?!?!")? Or was that Y106?

Don't forget the ubiquitous "if you have a Z94Q100Power99XFox96Rock1Hundred98.5 sticker on your car the Z94Q100Power99XFox96Rock1Hundred98.5 Prize Patrol may pull you over", or the "phrase that pays"!

And they are bringing along their promotional partners WXIA/WATL along for the ride once again. There is a story on the front of the 11alive.com homepage. This time they are billing it as the "Ultimate Reality Show". Last years contest was mentioned on almost every WXIA/WATL newscast while it was running.

Keep in mind "Survivor" has been on the air for almost 10 years now. "American Idol" for 7. Everyone thought reality TV was a fad that would go away quickly (like the 80's fad earlier this decade and the 70's fad during the 90's).

Another thing...their contest rules state that contestants must have a doctors note saying they are in good health and do not have cancer or diabetes or are not pregant. Star 94 could get sued for discrimination based on medical conditions. (Although they are doing so because they might get sued if a person with a condition gets sick as a result for participating).

As for Star 94...they are running out of ideas. They should try a new one...Lite 94.1.

Isn't that the contest that Q100 is doing now?
Proving there's nothing new under the sun.

The WSB Secret Sound dates back to the Elmo Ellis/Morning Merry Go Round days...30-35 years ago. And that was WSB AM, not then-Beautiful Music WSB FM 98, for all you chillun in the audience.

Could they? I've seen the same thing on signs at Six Flags rides.

If we are going to do redux then I vote for the "Ramblin' Raft Race"....probably one of the best radio promotions in history.
94Q was cookin' with gas in those days - that was one helluva party.
No promotion in Atlanta history has come close.

You are correct, sir. It absolutely was one of the best radio promotions in history! I was there, but our raft as listening to 96 Rock.

Put the drinking age back to 18, legalize weed (where's Inside when you need him ;) ), and get everyone to recycle their empties instead of chucking them on the riverbanks, and lighten up about very public displays of, ahem, affection ;) and you might could bring it back.

The baby boomers packed this one up and took it with them right as I was coming along in the early 80s. One of those other things you can't do on TV anymore...

Ah Ha! There it is, buried in all the second guessing, the point.

Here's what makes Live in to Win it IV or even XX a great idea. It delivers:

*mega exposure and cross promotion on a TV station web site
*over a million page views a month on Star94.com
*a 4-6 week promotion for key advertisers - automotive and the mall
*face to face contact with listeners and exposure to mall traffic (that could care less about ratings, postings or repetition)
*and through the richness of human behavior it refreshes content on a daily basis

This is one of the few radio stunt/promotions that actually embraces new technology and content delivery. Plus it examples to advertisers that radio can deliver an audience over multiple platforms.

But it MUST be a lousy idea because Roddy said it was. ::)

Great Promotion - until someone died. I still remember doing the movie premiere during the Summer of 1972 at Perimeter Mall and thinking it was on the other side of the Universe. Boy, how times change.

Of course, the American Rafting Association was out of it when the people died. Speaking of which, does anyone know where Larry Patrick of the ARA is these days - who was really behind the concept.

We did a raft on the in DC on the Potomac with him 25 years ago, but lost track of him after that.

KRMG inTulsa did a Great Raft Race for years, starting in the 60s or 70s. Nothing new about it. Although in T-town you have to treat with the Corps of Engineers to let enoigh water out of Keystone Lake the night before to wash the whitecaps and brown eels out of the Arkansas River, and get it deep enough to float a raft.

Interesting that you mention Tulsa. After the last event in Atlanta (that was renamed River Festival) word was that Larry Patrick had moved out west with the Ramblin' Raft Race package.

Don't forget the Fox Box Regatta at Lake Lanier. Listeners had to build their boats out of cardboard the morning of to race 200 yards out on Lake Lanier to win a new car.

Of couse, now you couldn't get 200 yards out into Lake Lanier.

Of course you can. And currently you won't get your feet wet, either. If you want to float for 200 yards, you'll have to line up with the chnnel however.
