Not as many...

...changes as I thought might happen in the new year. What with the flurry of radio-changing news in late-2006 I anticipated more than one station format flip. So which station is in the most need of a New Year's Resolution? I'm not talking about stations that you THINK should flip because the format is so abysmal but stations that should flip based on performance both in ratings and in the financial ledger. For example, I know half of you are dying to vote for 93.3 and the other half are dying to vote for 97.9. We know neither are going to happen.

So who is underachieving based on potential. Enough that it would perhaps warrant a flip and one is actually likely? Does Wilks change things up with their cluster to make them attractive to a buyer? Does Blitz pick up some new shows to help their stagnant ratings? Does the Brew tinker again since World Class Rock is getting them nowhere in a hurry (You would think they would have learned from The Fox)?

93.3 is under performing the most in my humble opinion but CC is using them strategically to protect WNCI. Is Columbus in a Catch-22 because of this? A better format for such a powerful signal would be something like what is on WCKX but in CC hands, that isn't gonna happen.

For those of you with XM or Sirius, what do you hear on there that you think could work in Columbus with a local flair?

I think that a variation of Sirius' The Bridge or The Spectrum would do well in Columbus. My personal preference would be a AAA Alternative station, mixing alternative country and/or blues. What does anyone else think?

I think we are in for another extremely lame, boring, and predictable year in radio with special thanks to Cheap Channel Communications. :-\

I predict that:

Wilks sells within the year and a new radio group will be brought into town. i'm not sure about the status of Wags and Elliott but if their contract is up, it will not be renewed nor do i think that they would want to anyway. p.s. does anyone know the new QFM night guy? i caught part of the name, dylan something. is he new or VT out of somewhere else that Wilks owns?

TED has to go. its not working, it never will. I don't care that they just got a signal boost, it's not going to make any difference. Its not programed well. its all over the place but at the same time, i still hear the same artists and sometimes the same song within a couple of days and i still don't listen very much to it. People always say they want variety but what I really think that people mean by that is that they don't like what is on the radio and they want to hear what they like and they consider what they like to be variety. what to put on it? for the location that the signal reaches best in (as much as i hate it) i would say some kind of county format.

WBNS-FM needs to figure out what station they are going to be. Once that happens, i think that they will start to rise in the ratings.

the blitz and the brew will continue to be stagnate in the ratings and, at some point this year, the blitz will hit their lowest ratings ever. the blitz will not pick up any new shows unless it is to replace the current morning show which i don't think will happen this year.

NCI, CKX, TVN, and COL will continue to battle it out for the top 4.

so yeah, pretty much the same old! haha

If North American Broadcasting keeps its pulse on the big talk (no pun intended) about Columbus radio, the speculation of Columbus having an FM talk station may be an option.

As Clear Channel's Akron/Canton operation is proving, there is a market for progressive talk. But just as Radio Free Ohio started with no Air America shows (as was the case with stations in Buffalo and Sacramento), the folks at NAB would be wise to steer clear of Air America. And it should NOT be just political talk (just no right-wingers to add to the glut in this market).

Stephanie Miller would be perfect right after Bob and Tom, followed by a talk show host whose gun collection increased during the Clinton years...the huntin', fishin', sports-lovin, meat-eating progressive, Ed Schultz. Both are syndicated by Jones Radio Networks.

And then there's the host with a boatload of stations that never got promoted in Columbus...Lionel, syndicated by WOR (also home to Bill O'Reilly). He's not liberal, he's not conservative. And he was extremely underrated in this market.

NAB might consider looking at the list of talkers on the station where Stephanie airs in Portland, and it's not the progressive talk station.

And if NAB played its cards right, it would take the local hosts on Ted and combine them with WMNI's news operation. It's now gotten to the point where I won't listen to WTVN for news anymore.

For their consideration on the news end. NAB should talk to Ed Esposito at 1590 WAKR in Akron. The locally owned station, which went back to all-local last August after ditching the same Westwood One feed WMNI used, just beat the pants off Cleveland's WTAM in the latest Arbitrons for Akron.

Look for more format changes coming this Monday at the Wilks Stations...

3 members of the Q morning show have 3 years left on contracts through CBS, which Wilks picked up. 2 other members just signed new deals with Wilks, So looks like the show will remain intact until Wilks sells. The goal of the sales department is to get Wilks their money within 18 months. Chris Dylan has been a parttimer at QFM for about 1.5 years. He's also done fill-in for the other 2 stations.

Boy would I love an FM talker in Columbus. I can't recall it ever being done... has it? With the slight fallout and Dispatch stories about the switch of 1230, NAB could see an initial buzz if they went Talk with Bob and Tom, Stefanie Miller and Ed Schultz. I don't think they would increase their ratings however. If 1230 struggled to pull in a 1.0 share, where is the motivation for NAB? I'm playing devil's advocate here because personally I would like to see it happen. I just don't think you could justify it.

ChangeS... plural... I don't suspect Q-FM but blowing up Wazoo is a real possibility but I am curious what K95.5 would possibly want to change. They have a loyal listenership, decent ratings (no where close to WCOL but they never will).

Also looking at Wilks webpage... they don't really do anything new and exciting that I think would be a good fit for Wazoo. Classic Rock? No way. Smooth Jazz? Covered. Alternative? Not strong anywhere now. CHR/AC? Wazoo would NEVER compete in this market.

I'm sure they're real successful. Judging from your standards, that means they must get a .8 share ..... up from the previous .5 they used to get! A real barn-burner of a station!

Actually, a 1.0 in Akron and going up.

And then there's CLEVELAND.

I will give you credit for one thing, though. You are fun to needle.

Actually its going down .8 in the latest trend in Akron, WTAM, was up WHLO was up and WNIR doubled those two combined

and then there is Cleveland, WARF didnt even show up in the ratings

He's a part-timer. No replacement named as of yet.

And there probably won't be a replacement. Parttimers work cheap, just the way Wilks likes it. The stations sound small market every day. K95.5 and WAZU will have new formats come next week. WAZU will even be sporting new call letters at some point pending FCC approval. All the speculation about possible formats is a lot better than what is actually going to happen. Both of these station have horrible signals. That's always been a major issue, one that likely will never get fixed.

Can it be that something will finally happen that George won't survive? The guy weathers management changes like a bomb shelter weathers spring showers. BTW Boyer, long time no talk. Hope you are well!

George doing mornings, Tyler now doing afternoons. All is OK...Thanks for asking..
