How many non-broadcast (cable) or DTV only UPN affils are there out there?

I know that WBOC in Salsbury, MD has "UPN 21" (pictured) on one of their digital subs with a relatively full schedule of programs including repurposed newscasts, Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune.
______________

WANE is carrying UPN Fort Wayne on one of its subchannels. Mostly syndicated stuff and replays of WANE newscasts outside of prime time.

I've actually been thinking that the best thing Viacom could do at this point would be to rebrand UPN as "CBS-II." Then it would be a logical step to just move UPN programming to a CBS subchannel after the digital switchover and let the current UPN stations be independent.

WVLT Knoxville, TN has UPN on one of its subchannels, which is available on local cable as well.

There is some logic behind that, but it's not likely to happen for one reason: Sinclair. IIRC, they own more UPN affiliates than anyone besides Viacom, most (if not all, aren't they in the process of selling off their single-station markets?) of which are part of duopolies w/ Fox or WB stations. I can't imagine they'd be too keen on having the affiliations yanked from a bunch of their stations and then having to program them as indies again.

I could see it happening in the markets where a separate UPN station isn't likely to happen or where an existing CBS/UPN duopoly (O&O or otherwise) would like to cut costs by shutting down a signal, but nowhere else.

2 More...

UPN 16 Rockford (Sub-channel of WTVO-DT) and UPN 14 Madison (Sub-channel of WISC-DT). Both are also available on cable.

WSBT in South Bend did that a few years ago, as UPN Michiana.

And KOLN/KGIN in Lincoln/Grand Island Nebraska just started UPN Nebraska on its digital channel.

That means no HD-UPN.

In the Fort Myers/Naples area, Comcast operates cable-only WNFM UPN 8; it's also carried by Time-Warner Cable of SW Florida (which will be Comcast come next year).

Their website is www.upn-8.com

That's actually quite a good idea taken straight from the BBC, except it would be confusing in markets that have a "CBS 2" such as New York or Chicago. How about CBS Plus? I think the CBS brand would boost ratings for UPN affiliates a lot, because UPN has become synonomous with token black sitcoms for many viewers, including myself.

And what, pray tell, on UPN's schedule would benefit from being broadcast in HD?

WIBW in Topeka, Kansas is carrying UPN after Letterman, despite the fact that KCWE in Kansas City, a UPN affiliate, is nearby. Unfortunately, Cox does not have it on their cable system, but they have 2 KC stations (KMBC, Channel 9-ABC and WDAF, Channel 4-Fox).

The answer is a little more than a dozen. Here are the ones I'm
aware of. Most are CBS affils (mostly owned by Gray) that multicast
a UPN channel on their DTV channel.

FL WCTV-DT Tallahassee (CBS)
GA WRDW-DT Augusta (CBS)
IL WTVO-DT Rockford (NBC)
IN WANE-DT Fort Wayne (CBS)
WSBT-DT South Bend (CBS)
KY WKYT-DT Lexington (CBS)
MD WBOC-DT Salisbury (CBS)
MN KBJR-DT Duluth (NBC)
MS WCBI-DT Columbus-Tupelo (CBS)
NE KOLN-DT/KGIN-DT Lincoln/Grand Island (CBS)
NC WCTI-DT Coastal NC (ABC) (the original digital UPN)
SD KELO-DT Sioux Falls (CBS) + satellites
TN WVLT-DT Knoxville (CBS)
TX KFDA-DT Amarillo (CBS)
KOSA-DT Midland/Odessa (CBS)
WI WISC-DT Madison (CBS)

UPN KPXJ 21 Shreveport apparently flash-cut to DTV only this week. It was analog, but a farily recent TV station that missed out on getting a second digital allocation.

Of course, this is not unique to UPN. WGEM-DT Quincy IL (NBC) carries a Fox channel (though "CGEM" started as a cable-only outlet in the mid-90s). ABC WTOK 11 Meridian MS is suppose to start a Fox channel called "Fox Meridian" this fall that will be available via WTOK-DT.

Several WB affils are done this way (WCYB-DT Tri-Cities TN/VA, WFXR-DT/WBVA-DT Roanoke/Lynchburg)

A few full-power TV stations have co-owned LPTV UPN outlets they simulcast on their DTV signal. KYTV-DT Springfield MO carries LPTV UPN there. North of there, ABC KMIZ carries both LPTV "KQFX Fox 38" and UPN KZOU-LP 11 within KMIZ-DT. KFDA-DT, above, multicasts KFDA's CBS programming, the UPN signal, and Telemundo LPTV KTMO-LP 36.

Didn't Tallahassee have a free-standing, digital-only UPN channel recently (WTLF-DT ch.24)?

Almost anything looks better in HD, although I'd say that dramas and action programs generally get more from it than sitcoms. For that matter, I expect that wrestling fans would enjoy seeing Smackdown in HD if that program lasts long enough to make the switch.

UPN's Monday night comedies are pretty consistent in their success, as has WWE Smackdown (now on Friday nights). If the critically liked "Everybody Hates Chris" takes off, it could help lift the new Thursday night lineup.

If the other networks are offering HD broadcasts, there's no reason UPN shouldn't.
______________

It's now WB "WB24" simulcast with WFXU 57; UPN affiliation went to Gray's WCTV-DT...
