Not happy with the current numbers? Is Sunny skewing younger?

In the past day and a half, I've heard "Straight Up" by Paula Abdul, "Love Shack" by The B-52's, and "Rock Steady" by The Whispers on 104.5. These are songs that weren't even thought of in the original plan for the new Sunny 104.5. These songs wouldn't have been played even a few weeks ago.

So the questions are: Is management unhappy with Sunny's latest numbers? Are they skewing too old? Are they planning to go head-to-head with B101? (And if so, how will that affect Infinity's plans for WOGL?)

Not to be picky ;-) but the last song has been on Sunny for about two years now. The first two, however, you are correct. They are new.

I heard "Love Shack" but haven't heard the Paula Abdul song yet. Wow. Never thought I'd hear that. I'm not sure if this is the right move. Going head to head with the B? Sunny's got to be different. Not a carbon copy of someone else.

Much was made (largely by me) a few weeks ago when Sunny started adding select classic rock tracks to their playlist. Now they're adding hot 90s titles too? Yikes. I have to agree, this is NOT the Sunny we listened to when it debuted.

As I said about the classic rock tunes, this must be Sunny's way of evolving into another Jack clone.

How could Clear Channel be "happy" with 13th 25-54? I agree with the last post.....they are becoming like an older "jack" (play anything..etc).

Sounds like a messed up station. Could they be considering a version of Spanish?

Well, Sunny's situation is a little different. It is so cheap to run that it makes more money than other stations with higher ratings. I guess 13th might be where they draw the line?

Does anyone know how Sunny stacks up (revenue-wise) against other Clear Channel properties in the city? Of course, I'm not just talking about the money they're bringing in... I'm talking about what they're left with after subtracting operating expenses. Any clues?

Why Spanish? This is America! Is Spanish always an alternative? It shouldn't be. The people coming to this nation who talk Spanish should learn the English language. Not the other way around.

I could not agree more, if this is fair, where are the German (largest ethnic US group), Italian, Polish, Jewish, French, Greek and other ethnic language formats at??? Be fair or don't do it at all. I do not agree with all the Spanish formatted stations popping up, I for one, do not, nor care to speak or understand Spanish and I do not want this format cluttering the dial and taking away formats that I enjoy. On my cable system, there are many MC and DMX Hispanic music channels, outnumbering the normal music channels. Why??

Agreed! If you are going to live in America, learn Englsih. Also, people may say that Spanish people deserve to have stations, but they are the ones who left their homes and came here. Here it is English and English stations. Nothing against Spanish people though. <P ID="signature">______________

You are joking, right?

If you aren't...what is the largest demographic not being served by radio in Philly? Asian? Gay? Arian Nation? I think that Hispanic is untapped potential in radio, for a couple of reasons.

If you have a solid FM Hispanic station in Philadelphia, with a major signal and some marketing, it would be another "niche" station...just like WPPZ. The TSL would be ridiculous, just like WPPZ. The listener would turn it on, and leave it on...just like WPPZ. Eventually though, will it get on general market buys is the real question, and I think everyone is waiting to see what happens with WPPZ. Which audience do you think is bigger in Philly, Gospel or Hispanic? I have no idea.

Next, let's think about the future...(disclaimer, read really fast like the end of a car commercial: this is in no way intended to be racist, stereotypical or putting down anyone's culture.)...ok, think about the type of person that will not be able to purchase a car that has satellite radio included?

Do you think that Kia or Hyundai or lower end Honda's and Fords are going to come with satellite options? I think that lower income demographics will become the new radio demo 5 years down the road...do you think that someone that lives just above the poverty line is going to be able to afford an ipod, of XM, or sirius? I think that radio remains what it has always been - free entertainment.

Untapped potential as the industry changes.

Just my 2 pesos.

hey dude...it's possible to have an english speaking station that plays spanish music...or a combination (spanglish). Not sure what your problem with people that "don't speak english" could be, but you really should get out more.

Sunnys format is the finest on radio and is a notch above OLG and the BEE.. its only a matter of time before they overtake them in ratings... a change is premature.

Absolutely. By the next ice age, Sunny will pass the B. Just a matter of time....and lots of it.

No they should be able to go from 13th to 1st in no time.......right.

Actually, now with "JT" in the afternoon the numbers should be on the rise any day now. Plus, they are giving away Neil Diamond tix on their web site. Big stuff.

B101, imho, skews "old": toasted 70's tunes and lame tunes from the 80's. That seems to be catering mostly to women 35/54. Just my opinion of their CORE music.

SUNNY tried to "out-B101" B-101. Didn't quite work. Hence, they're trying to skew a bit younger, perhaps 25/34-females or 25/49-females tops.

Since they had little to lose, it seems to be a reasonable programming strategy to me. Of course, if they're REALLY skewing younger permanently, the proof will be in the trends and the Summer Book.

(From somewhere in my memory banks, didn't some programmers say that, on an AC, the music tempos speed up and the tunes get somewhat younger in the Summer and then take the reverse tack in the Winter? That sounds familiar anyway.)

Now, if we can just get SUNNY to program "Whip It", "Free Fallin'" and/or "Suddenly Last Summer"...I might even listen more. :)

I have no problem with people who don't speak English. I guess I went over the top with this issue.
