Not KOOL - all jocks on vacation

:(

KOOL dumped out of Christmas music with a Carpenters record at midnight, they'd been running robojock with "Nameless/Faceless Voice Guy" all day. I can live with that.

But now, NFVG's liners say the ENTIRE airstaff is out for the week. One reason to listen to KOOL is air talent that knows the format and can do a good talk-up. I can understand shifting folks around to handle vacation shifts, but going for days on end without a living human is ridiculous.

I shudder at the thought of what would happen should there be a need for a live body on the air. What happens if there's a major emergency or the death of a core artist?

Are the other CBS O&Os running on auto-pilot as well?

If such an emergency - and I mean a real emergency that would require the services of CBS News, not just announcing the death of a musician who hasn't had a hit in 30 years - were to happen, I'd guess that at worst, they'd pick up a news feed from either one of the local TV stations (probably Channel 5), CBS-TV directly, CNN, or KNX radio in LA.

Lets all just pray that Rupert Holmes and Gilbert O'Sullivan not die this week.

...but how will Nurse Jeff and I know the singer of "Brown Eyed Girl"? ??? ???

Think about it though, its kinda cool. Every jock wants off the week between the holidays. This way, everyone gets it. For the station that probably has the most personality on the FM dial, it kinda makes us
appreciate the regular content of the airstaff. Station does sound different. But sounds good. Certainly is well produced with lots of holiday specific content. And this way, its less vacation time later. I mean, figure it. how many fulltime people does KOOL have?

And its also a non-rated week.

When a market switches to the PPM (Portable People Meter), is it monitored -- and reported -- 24/7/365? I certainly hope so; I look forward to the day when stations can no longer get away with subpar programming efforts due solely to the absence of audience measurement. (Although, it sounds like KOOL is doing a much better job than most stations would in this situation.)

And the same applies for television's ridiculous, misleading sweeps periods and the LPM (Local People Meter). April 2008 -- the month in which LPMs will be launching in Phoenix -- cannot get here fast enough.

How about somewhat subpar programming efforts during measured dayparts?

Think "Saturday morning syndication" instead of a live jock on KOOL-FM.
(PD Kris: hint, hint.)

I think it's an interesting idea to 'close down the station' and go full automation for a week. Only certain formats could do it. Let's see what stations follow KOOLs lead next year.

It WON'T become anywhere near as common as the all-Christmas trend has in the last few years...Far from it IMHO. It points up how radio usage changes during the holidays, unless you're one that has to go to work each day during this time of the year. Just look around your neighborhood and see how many people take at least some of the holidays off...

It HAS been an interesting approach, but I'll echo someone else that made this point: KOOL is one of the fewer stations on the dial that gains a LOT of mileage out of their PERSONALITY on the air. Without it, they'd become "just another radio jukebox." And I can do THAT at home with Winamp and my own music collection...
