NOT MUCH ACTION ON VIRGINIA BOARD

I have been noticing that compared with other markets and states , there is not much disscussion at all concerning radio and tv on this board . Are people just bored with commercial broadcast stations ? Have the XM and Sirus systems done us in ????

With the exception of Hampton Roads (Norfolk/V.B.), Richmond, and Northern VA (technically DC), not much happens here on a daily basis. Hell, my site SVRTV (cheap plug) goes a couple days at a time without an update due to lack of news. It really isn't that bad )

Not much going on? Well maybe it could be that there is actually stuff happening but SVRTV either overlooks it or simply doesn't want to fool with reporting it. SVRTV has dropped the ball quite a a bit lately. For example just this past week WINC's Steve Edwards is joining the Frederick County School system. Reported in the Winchester Star but NOT on SVRTV. Why? Last I checked WINC is a Winchester station.

My sister runs a small business on the downtown mall in Winchester. Recently she had a number of radio salesfolks tell her that WFQX may be going all sports by the end of the year with 610 heading into the Hispanic direction. Rumor? Yes, But there is a way you can post this stuff online and not run into trouble with Clear Channel. Just point it out that it is indeed a rumor and that it may/ may not happen. DCRTV does this all the time.

The new Winchester channel 3 MAY NOT be an ABC affiliate afterall. Rumor? Maybe but then again on 3's website's the ABC logo is missing. Why? Either way it is not reported on SVRTV.

A former female radio sales rep was recently busted in West Virginia on charges of prostitution. Both the Martinsburg Morning Journal and the Hagerstown Hearld-Mail reported this but again it was NOT on SVRTV.

The nude pictures problem involving one of the Martinsburg radio stations, Bob & Tom may be leaving WWRT this fall, Comcast may be canning the audio from WINC from their local cable access channel when they take over the local Adelphia facilities.

Don't see any of this discussed on SVRTV. Why? Not exactly hard to check these stroies out. Ask just about any business in Martinsburg about the nude pics and I am sure some of the businesses who advertise on 105.5 can tell you about the stuation regarding Bob & Tom even though I doubt 105.5 would say anything about it. No need to say "heard from XXX", just stress these as rumors just like this Red Zebra story on DCRTV. Covers your butt and if these stories do turn out to be fact ( and often they do ) then you can say it was reported on SVRTV. And if they do turnn out to be false, then you can bring up " the well that is what we heard" card.

Yes, I know SVRTV is a two person operation. But then again both VARTV and DCRTV are both run by ONE person. Can't use that for an excuse.

Don't get me wrong. I like SVRTV but they really need to do a better job in reporting the news.

Read ALL the local papers ( Winchester, Martinsburg, Harrisonburg, Hagerstown, Staunton, Charlottesville, etc.. ), check out ALL of the station's websites at least once a week, hear the rumors, look at all the media based sites (not just DCRTV ) and try to develop a working relationship with a least one person who is employed at each station then maybe you may have at least one fresh new story every day.

Hey BK77,

Lemme try and answer a couple of your points. You are right on the Steve Edwards/WINC story, but I did have that up there, before the hacking (which knocked us back to the 16th on Yahoo's "back up" server....so that is my mistake...I will fix that).

I had not heard of the 99.3/610 rumor. If you hear of these things, please let me know. I will gladly post it online, but if I don't know I can't. I rely on people like you to tell me of these rumors that float around Winchester.

I noticed that on TV3 Winchester's site as well, but thought they were just going with an ABC-less logo. I know on the banners along the parade route during Apple Blossom, they didn't have the ABC logo either, but everything I have heard and read is that they are going ABC, as they are going to carry WHSV's ABC programming signal. I will contact Brad Ramsey (GM at TV3 Winchester) to make sure.

About the former female sales rep, again this one I didn't know. I live in Stephens City, so I don't get the Martinsburg or Hagerstown papers here, but if you hear about these things, again, please let me know. I will gladly post the story and give you credit, as I do with Al McGilvray (SVRTV's Co-Editor), for the story.

Again, I didn't know about Comcast canning WINC or B&T leaving WWRT/WWRE (BRING BACK JOE SANCHEZ!) but again, please let me know.

The reason I didn't post anything about the "nude pictures problem involving one of the Martinsburg stations", is because I was asked not to by the person who posed for those pictures. I personally was staying as far away from that story as possible. I knew it was a story and could have covered it, but I made a personal decision not to.

You are right though, I need to be more on the ball. But if you hear about these things before I do, please let me know. I will check into the 99.3/610, Comcast/WINC, and B&T/RCR rumors on Monday. I personally would like to see Joe Sanchez back at Mornings, so I hope the latter is true. I will also re-add the Steve Edwards story in just a couple minutes.

Again, I will be "more on the ball" and try to keep on things better than I have before.

The main reason why there isn't much action here is mainly due to the mailbag on www.dcrtv.com . Same reason why the Baltimore/Washington and Maryland boards are a bit on the slow too.

Don't take this the wrong way but I can tell you have never worked in the business. I saw this on your site..

..."After calling both CC-Winchester and Mid-Atlantic for comments on our rumors, Mid-Atlantic said that Real Classic Rock was NOT dropping "Bob & Tom" anytime soon (meaning at all) and CC-Winchester said that WFQX-FM 99.3 and WTFX-AM 610 were remaining with their current formats of active rock and sports from FOX, respectively. Again, rumors will be rumors and that is all those were."

Here is some advice coming from someone who used to be a PD, even if stations do plan on making changes ( not saying they will in this case ) but 99% of the time they will still deny them. Of all the stations I worked at, every single one of them its a rule that inside programming decisons are NOT allowed to be discussed with those who aren't employees. And even then often even the jocks on the staff really don't know until days, sometimes the same day before some big change actually happens. I once worked at a station that was switching formats from religious to news/talk. Yes I had people call me up telling they heard rumors about my station switching formats. I knew the rumors were true but still I had to tell them they were bogus since I was under orders by our owner NOT to say anything about it to anyone other than the staff. Lying? Well yes it was but they were the ones who signed my paycheck and I had to do what they wanted me to do.

What did you expect Clear Channel and Mid Atlantic to say to you on the phone?

Hey MLeach,

Actually, I was the first to know about when 98.3 was going to switch to Kiss. I have a working relationship with both PDs and they know I am going to call and ask, and I know that 99% of the time they are going to "bullshit" me or say "no comment"....the other 1% of the time, they will say, "yeah, this is the plan".

It doesn't hurt to give them a call.

While its good to have a working relaitionship with a program director, its also good that have the same thing with other employees too, such as those in sales as well. Yes, sales folks can promise the moon but many of times they know as much if not more what is really going on. Same with Engineers too.

Also I wouldn't mention online that you do call up PDs. Could give others the idea that they can call too and that can be a problem for not only them but for you as well.

Hey MLeach,

I do try to have a good working relationship with everyone at the radio stations I cover, but the PDs I contact the most. Just some radio stations and DJs (won't name names) seem to not like me just cause.
