Not much buzz about Supertalk now is there?

It's amazing, the ratings come out and all the folks who had clamored about the death of 55KRC and 700WLW have gone back to their ham radios and listening to old Supremes records in thier faux wood paneled basement I guess. Not much talk about Supertalk now is there? I know it takes a while to build a brand, but there is barely an inkling of a foundation there, much less a permanent structure.

I hope the 2AG negotiated a serious payout in the event they change format, and if I were Furman, I would go ahead and sign the extension he tells everybody he has in his hand, as long as it has the same sort of language in it.

96.5 might as well go ahead and do sports talk 24/7

Not enough market share for the two stations that are doing sports all the time here anyway...WSAI has worse ratings than the progressive talk station did. For that matter, so does Supertalk.

AAA would be great, but nobody in this markets has the balls to launch any format that will take a year or two to get its legs.

The geniuses are on the board again, I see.

Oh really? Don't tell these stations:

STATION-MARKET 12+ RANK/12+ SHARE
WTOP-Washington DC #2/5.6
WTKK-Boston #14/2.6
KTAR-Phoenix #6/3.8
KTLK-Minneapolis #14/2.1
KFTK-St. Louis #10/3.7
WPGB-Pittsburgh #6/5.2
WWTN-Nashville #7/4.8

These stations have been doing talk for many years. Nashville is the smallest market I went to. I know there are more below that such as KWQW in Des Moines. But why do more to prove you wrong?

FM is the future for talk radio. WIBC Indianapolis is another am talk station moving from AM, and part of the reason for that is AM is declining in quality and if broadcasters have to start paying the RIAA royalties for the music they play it will only mean more talk on FM.

I'll add WTKS-Orlando to that List #11/3.6
Granted it is hot talk.. but it is still talk

and I'll point out that they were the number 1 station in the market a few years ago

WHIO-FM has quite a few listeners as well

NPR/PRI are the only ones that can make talk work on FM.

You're dead wrong, my friend. It's being done successfully on FM stations in quite a few markets right now.

How much longer will Cumulus stick with Supertalk? That's the question
Until the non-compete runs out, and they can go country again. That would be about a year from now.

I just love how it seems certain people have a personal ax to grind. Did we get fired from Cumulus or something? I understand the ratings are terrible etc. However, there's gotta be something more here.

brian65 asks, "How is FM talk doing in Cincinnati?"

Better question Brian is, "How did those stations above do after LESS than one year?"

It's hilarious that you guys get so worked up and pound your chests about 96.5 when it hasn't even been on the air for a year yet. On top of that, it had one of the worst morning shows in history during its first 10 months. There's never going to be any kind of audience build with a Mancow type show. Just awful.

Seems to me that alot of the 96.5 haters are now looking foolish with the addition of Gamble and Skinner to the lineup. The October numbers will be interesting, but not as interesting as the complete fall book.

I also don't remember anyone seriously writing that WLW and WKRC would get pounded by an all-syndicated talk FM.

And I'll add another perennial FM talk powerhouse from inside Ohio: WNIR 100.1 FM Kent/Akron is #1 regularly.

I've heard it said that the medium (AM, FM, internet, satellite) doesn't matter much if the content is good... I tend to agree.

>>>point taken...KRC was the target in the beginning, and I overstated the potential that was voiced on this board. Sorry.

The model for FM talk is Real Radio WTKS http://www.wtks.com/ and its now owned by Clear Channel. Cumulus will never program 96.5 similar to Real Radio which is all local. Until Cumulus gets some more local programming throughout the day and better imaging, I don't see it becoming the new BIG ONE.

But that would mean (gasp!) SPENDING MONEY to hire (bigger gasp!) TALENT

microbob....WTKS is not the model for talk on FM. AM radio is the model for talk on FM. All of the stations that I listed above are traditional news/talk stations that happen to be on FM. WTKS is a rarity. The Free-FM disaster wrought on major markets by CBS Radio is proof that listeners don't want the "in your face" shock jock type talk. Opie and Anthony are getting cancelled everywhere. (Philly this week and Chicago very soon.) FM talk will work because of the inferiority of AM.

Who says 96.5 wants to be the new BIG ONE? Maybe they just want to carve out their niche and service it. When you consider Denny McKewon makes them tons of money, I don't think "shock FM Talk" is what's needed.
