Not the Satellite Sisters; Another AAR Money Crunch?

Libtalker Doing Well In San Diego

What nonsense! In 12+, KLSD is a strong #3 AM in the San Diego market (with #4 trailing far behind) and a strong #11 overall, in a market with 37 rated stations (39 if you count simulcasts as two stations).

KLSD's 12+ share is almost FOUR TIMES the share of KCBQ, Salem's conservative talker and more than SIX TIMES the share of KPRZ, Salem's Christian talker. In other words, KLSD has almost TWO AND A HALF TIMES the COMBINED share of Salem's two stations in the market.

I haven't seen the 25-54s for San Diego, but everywhere else the lib talkers are doing better in that demo than in 12+.

Re: Why does a format that beats Sean Hannity in a money demo in his own market have to resort to brokering time? (n/t)

Do you mean "why did Air America rent WLIB rather than getting an affiliate?"

My guess is they felt they needed a NY affiliate, and nobody was willing to take the risk, so they bought their way in. Now, they probably have a long term contract and could not get an affiliate without breaking it.

Nah, I don't have room for any more stickers. My bumpers are already full with stickers that say IMPEACH BUSH!; MAKE LOVE, NOT WAR!; ANIMAL RIGHTS!; and MR. ARBITRON CAN'T READ! (see my post about San Diego ratings below).

The reason for the black oriented programing which remains on WLIB overnight is because of complaints from ex WLIB listeners (and activists) when mainstream programing replaced Carribean shows which had been the mainstay of WLIB for years.

From today's Fybush report;

WLIB (1190) has pulled Air America's late-night talker Mike Malloy from its schedule. Replacing him in the 10-midnight slot will be ABC's "Satellite Sisters" show, which apparently wanted a New York clearance quite badly. Imhotep Gary Byrd's overnght talk show continues from midnight until 5 AM, when the Air America leased-time programming resumes.

and as I have said before, all the predictions which some people make up, in the end just make the person posting look silly and ill informed.

Satellite Sisters Update

Contrary to the report on the usually reliable industry website, All Access, WLIB is broadcasting two hours of the weekday Satellite Sisters program syndicated by ABC instead of Mike Malloy tonight. Various reports in the trade press, plus Malloy's own on-air comments, suggest this is a "pay to play" deal.

Tonight's SS program on WLIB ran with a cowcatcher announcement telling listeners to go to XM Radio or AAR's online audio stream to hear the program. Malloy has made comments to quell listener discontent but posts on Malloy's online Bulletin Board shows at least some listeners are up in arms about this move. http://www.mikemalloy.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=33128

Online reports suggest AAR has put their hours on WLIB after 7 pm weekdays and weekend hours up for sale. If so, this could mean another syndicator could buy up the Majority Report timeslot, as well. (Glenn Beck has moved to New York and reportedly Premiere Radio is stepping up efforts to get him cleared locally. Glenn Beck 7 to 10 pm on WLIB? The mind boggles but stranger things have happened.)

AAR has a three year lease on WLIB. Now they are sub-leasing part of their hours to another "tenant." New Yorkers know this is what you do when you've got an apartment you don't want to give up and you can't afford the rent. For all the other stations which carry AAR programs, the company has more or less a standard syndication deal: AAR provides a program and gets "x" avails to sell per hour, and the station gets "y" avails to sell locally. But in New York, WLIB has to meet the rent (which is a substantial cash drain). Their deal to get cleared in New York does not make good business sense (and never did). What is apparent is AAR is looking desperate to generate cash to the extent they are weakening their core on-air product.

I know some of you don't want to hear. Some of you want to kill the messenger. But apologists in denial won't solve the company's problems.

Yes, the Satellite Sisters

> Inner City Broadcasting, owner of WLIB, is reclaiming
> Malloy's hours and will be broadcasting Caribbean music.

Of course, that was nonsense. I'm listening to WLIB right now and the Satellite Sisters are on and say they will continue to be on WLIB, Monday through Friday. No "Caribbean music."

> WLIB had a full-time Caribbean format (with somewhat better
> numbers)prior to AAR's launch and has continued to broadcast
> Caribbean programming during the overnight hours

No it hasn't. Gary Byrd continues to do a left-wing local TALK SHOW during the overnight hours on WLIB.

And as David Eduardo has pointed out (further down in this thread) WLIB now has much better 25-54 ratings than it did when it actually did play Caribbean music (and about the same 12+ numbers.)

Anybody want to count all the bits of misinformation that mwebster has posted on these boards in the past week? Or since last July, when he began his current anti-Air America campaign under his current screen name? It's mind boggling.

While not nearly as bombastic, and although Malloy is a decent talent, Lionel on WOR is IMHO a more entertaining listen for the garden variety liberal.

Money Crunch Solution

Not saying they're in a crunch, but think of the profit AAR could make by leasing 100-or-so hours a week, more or less a traditional LMA with the licensee actually trying to stay involved (see: Wayne Gellman), and then subleasing individual hours at a higher rate. Since the signal is far from the worst, they might be able to command a decent penny. Just use AAR as fill for hours that aren't sold, allowing them to still claim a "clearance". The money could be used to lease one of the Asian or Spanish stations closer to the glove compartment for a 24/7 clearance on a much lesser signal. Or pay off debt, or whatever.

Credibility

I quote a respected industry website. You quote political blogs. You can't tell the difference between news sites and blogs and you talk about credibility!

Your definition of credibility, like most political types, is based only on what you want to hear.

If Salem, Premiere or any other broadcaster did business in the same manner as AAR, you'd be all over them, and rightly so. But you give AAR a free pass just because you agree with them. And, true to form for politicians, you resort to personal comment about AAR critics rather than dealing with the substance of what has been posted.

You people say I have an axe to grind in criticizing AAR but when you puff AAR that's somehow different. In my dictionary, that's hypocrisy.

Which online reports. Links please.

> AAR has a three year lease on WLIB. Now they are

We still haven't had any confirmation about who is going to receive the checks here. There is 99% speculation here and 1% fact, and that is coming from Mike Malloy who has been the only one talking thus far.

> I know some of you don't want to hear. Some of you want to
> kill the messenger. But apologists in denial won't solve

Neither will idle speculation that conveniently always seems to come down against the company from certain quarters.

We've been through month after month of hyped "scandals" from unemployed talk show hosts which came to naught, slanted ratings, claims that nobody is listening to liberal talk, lies about Secret Service investigations into AAR hosts, and in some places accusations that AAR is siding with "the enemy."

People can debunk some of these themselves just by picking up the phone. The blog "scandal" over Al Franken and AAR being under investigation by NY authorities that, to this day, is still being whipped by the Unequalizer (who as of late finally taken his sheet off and dropped the pretense of being an independent industry analyst and shows his true colors - an unemployed right wing talk show host who couldn't draw flies who now wants to be a paid hack for right wing talking points), turned out to be a lie.

The claim by Matt Drudge that Randi Rhodes was being investigated by the Secret Service turned out to be news to... the Secret Service, who said there was no investigation.

The claim by Bill O'Reilly that nobody listens to Air America was ironic, considering he is being trounced in several markets by AAR shows (and his show dropped in several others for low ratings.)

The bottom line here is that we really don't know for certain what is going on here. To use speculation as a foundation to suggest AAR is "desperate" to generate cash, and then suggest that those of us who would like to have something more than speculation are "apologists in denial" is... amusing.

Is it shooting the messenger or asking the messenger to cough up something beyond colored speculation? We report. You decide.

There you go, shooting yourself in the foot again.

Please provide an example to support your assertion.

Personally, I can't think of one. I tend to cite newspaper articles.

(A free clue -- the fact that a newspaper may have the word "Progress" in its name doesn't mean that it's a lefty blog.)

For whatever it's worth, the "Daily Progress" is indeed the name of the mainstream daily newspaper in Charlottesville, VA.
