Not worth the hype

The big deal on "Hip Hop" radio right now is the new Kanye West/Jay-Z track called "Otis" in which they sample Otis Redding's reading of the song "Try A Little Tenderness". Colby Cole, afternoon drive man on WENZ, is "Lady Ga Ga", er, let me re-phrase that... "Mr. Ga Ga" over this recording. He's so hot on it that he played it twice in a row yesterday, and went into a little speech about how great this track is. I beg to differ.
I'm not saying it's lousy, but it's not as ground breaking as he makes it out to be (imo). I mean, come on, sampling has been done forever in Hip Hop/Rap. It starts out with Otis Redding singing, but they quickly start throwing in some noise with the original recording making it a jumbled mess to me, then they take one little sound-bite from the song and basically do their rap over it. Maybe Colby is all over this song because it gives some love to an old-time legend. However, if he thinks this thing is going to inspire young listeners to go check out more of Otis Redding's music, I think he's mistaken because it doesn't show Mr. Redding to a good advantage at all (imo).

It should be illegal. Like Peter Gabriel said (and took heat for saying it) about rap, you're starting with someone else's creativity and cashing in on it. Not right.
