Asking a man about his taste in processors is like asking a man about his taste in women...everyone has a different opinion.

I applaud the fact that Frank Foti takes the time to come by here and join the discussion. I'm an Orban fan, but hey, to each their own, right? I have a ton of respect for Frank, and what he's brought to the Engineering community over the years.

Having said that, we let the argument continue below for a while, because to have good discussion, there sometimes needs to be opposing points of view. We had that, and it's now getting out of hand. To continue those veins of discussion would accomplish nothing. Someone asked for a cease-fire, and I think that was reasonable.

It's time to move on. It was a great discussion, and I hope we have more of them. We just need to cool down a bit.

Again, thanks to all who participate, especially Frank and Scott. A quick note to Bob Orban:

Bob Orban has probably too many lists he is on already...including the professional Radio tech and Broadcast lists...he is just not a member here...
Just because Frank and others have joined and posted here is nothing against or in favor of Bob Orban or anyone else. On the RadioTech list, they have discussed and hashed over audio processing manytimes...and as you said, everyone has an opinion...

I am completely aware of Bob Orban's participation elsewhere. My comment was meant to be tongue-and-cheek!

Hopefully I'm not the only one who sees the beauty in all processors. :)

I've heard some pretty good sounding stations using Orban's stuff, but the Omnia has made for some sweet sounds on a few A/C stations I've been familiar with. I have to think there's more to it than the box. I know of a station that 'stole' the competitors settings and ended up sounding like garbage.

Probably the nuttiest thing I saw was a CBS Volumax in an audio chain, temporarily replacing a failing Orban product. That station opened wide up, was robust, and wasn't over driven. It was a public radio station playing classical, and it sounded amazing.

Classical music is one format where wideband processing (of the Audimax/Volumax variety) is subjectively superior to multiband processing, because it preserves the tonal balance of the original recording. A finely tuned and well-maintained Audimax/Volumax audio chain can sound excellent on the air, although on FM it's best followed by a light touch of composite clipping to compensate for the overshoots caused by the Volumax's rudimentary clipper and low-pass filter.

Yep, it also depends on the STL and the exciter and freq response of the transmitter chain..I had two FMs, one classic rock and one AC...both running the exact same audio chain and processors (not to mention transmitters)...but the CR station sounded better than the AC station with the same settings on the 8200s both had (even on the same song!)....only thing I could guess at was one station was running AV in CD/non-compressed mode and one ran Prophet with MPEG2 (you can probably guess which was which). Then another station where we switched from an Orban to a Omnia...because the PD heard a sister station out west with an Omnia and wanted us to sound exactly like them...even copied their settings...sounded like canned meat!!! (I put the 8200 back on as soon as the PD was fired)...I still think something was wrong in the exciter...but then it sounded GREAT with an 8100/XT2 feeding it on backup one day....great lows and fantastic sound! I tried to convince the new PD to leave it on...but he wanted to diddle with the 8200 more...oh well, you cant win for losing..

Best air chain I ever had in an AM was a Volumax feeding the STL and then at the xmtr a LA4 followed by a 5 band graphic eq and the old faithful BL40 Modulimiter....even on a CCA transmitter with poor positive mod, it sounded great!
