Note to KARN

While at the Razorback game in LR last weekend, I noticed that KARN has about a 6 second delay on it's signal. I see absolutely no reason for the delay during a ballgame. I was unable to listen to the game while at the game over KARN. KABZ apparently doesn't use a delay, or it least turns it off during Razorback games, so I listened to the broadcast on their station. You would think KARN would realize that no one at the stadium could stand to listen to them with that 6 second delay. Also, whenever a TV game comes along, the delay would REALLY be annoying. Maybe the bigshots at Citadel will read this and change this policy.

Since I don't work for KARN, I don't know for sure but perhaps it's to try to sync up with the TeeVee broadcast for those folks (like me) who watch the game on the tube and listen to the radio.

Stations that have gone IBOC digital end up with a 7 second delay. Has KARN gone digital?

(They delay the analog the same amount so that digital receivers can switch back and forth.)

For quite a while now KARN-FM has had about a seven-nine second delay behind KARN-AM.

I don't know that this is so much Citadel policy as it is someone just not flipping a switch somewhere. I bet it can be fixed with very little red tape or requests through the corporate channels.

On a different note, I notice that the 9-11 AM slot is open once again.....

WFLA AM 540 down here in Orlando has a delay whenever they broadcast the gator games. It is very annoying though if you are trying to listen to the broadcast and watch the game. BTW, how does Chuck Barrett sound?????

KARN-AM and FM were both on the delay. I have heard that there is a pretty good delay on Sat. TV. I've noticed that the best combination is watching the game on cable tv and listening to a radio station that doesn't use a delay.

wpiv926: you have ignored my question. Is it because you don't know what IBOC HD radio is, or are you being rude?

I looked it up myself. Yes, both KARN-AM and KARN-FM are equipped to do digital broadcasting. To do the approved version of digital which was designed created by Ibiquity, the program content MUST be delayed by seven seconds so that all the digital processing can take place. It is also required that the main analog channel must be synchronized by delaying it by seven seconds also. That way, as you drive down the street listening to the HD-IBOC digital signal, if the digital fades the received in your car will automatically switch to analog. And then when digital reception improves, it switches back. If the program content bounced back and forth by seven seconds every time it switched, you might get vertigo and upchuck all over your car.

I am sure the people at KARN would live for you to watch the game on TV and LISTEN on KARN and they wish it could be synchronized. Maybe someday they can convince TV to also delay 7 seconds. Then the people in towns where the radio station is NOT digital will complain.

Digital radio is very controversial right now. If you follow the conversation of station engineers on some Internet Bulletin Boards, you will find that a number of them are hoping IBOC fails and that the FCC will then turn to some other technology to improve the audio signal by digital technology.

Oh no-now who's going to spend every day talking about the Little Rock school board.javascript:void(0);
Wink

Seriously, is it just me or is anyone else tired of hearing the early morning weather forecast all the way through the 1pm hour?

The delay is a byproduct of being a digital HD radio station. ALL AM and FM stations that adopt the IBOC digital system are delayed, not to protect from shame-shame language or other legal issues. It is not a corporate decision of the licensee to delay. It is simply part of the mechanics, the engineering of how HD digital radio works.

Pardon me, sir, but I worked for Citadel when the decree came down...''run a delay on any and all shows which are talk-oriented.'' It's not a technology thing at all. It's all to protect the license from being jeopardized.

I'm sorry. I guess the two of us are talking apples and oranges. This thread of discussion began with a complaint that KARN is running a 7-second delay on Arkansas ball games. The complaint was that one could no longer watch the game on TV and LISTEN on radio and be comfortable bacause of the 7-second delay. The complaint was not about a talk show.

You may be right. KARN may or may not be running the HD digital signal that they have announced that they run. IF, IF they are running IBOC digital, then they are doing a 7-second delay induced by the IBOC hardware, not by some delay system that allows purging naught talk.

The original question was about ball games, not talk shows.

If you say Citadel mandates a delay system for talk shows, then it is so. What must be a real "kick in the head" is to run a talk show with delay which then feeds into an IBOC Ibiquity system that then introduces an additional 7-second delay.

I would also assume that somebody could "fat finger" the controls and run a ball game through the talk show mandated delay system, even when the IBOC digital system was deactivated which would make your scenario right on target.

I listened last Saturday and flipped back and forth between 102.9 and 103.7 and saw no difference whatsoever. So I am taking it they have overcome the problem?

920 is on a pretty serious delay... The other night I filed my report with the ARN Scoreboard show when I as driving through LR, and turned my radio back up when I hung up... I caught the last fifteen seconds of the report. I hit FM and they were way ahead of the AM.

If I'm listening to Sports Rap on one of my stations in Morrilton or Russellville and miss something Wally or Shawn said before the break, I can hit 920 and hear it - it seems to be very far behind.

Re: Note to KARN Delay

I don't know of any radio stations that air on a delay. The problem is that the delays are caused by the video carrier and how it is delivered to the viewer. Some people see games on digital tv, regular cable and satellite.
If you have the opportunity to listen to the games and watch the way each delivers, you'll notice a 4-7 second delay on the video....not the audio. I have digital dvr and I also have 1 tv that is connected directly into the wall and there is almost a 2 second delay between the two sets.
