Note to KLJT: Turn The Light back on!

When I first moved back to Jacksonville in 1999, KLJT 102.3 FM was carrying Salem's "Today's Christian Music" format. They were all satellite except for morning drive.

The format was a KSWP-style Christian Contemporary format with various features, like "Reasons to Believe," "Inside the Music," and a live concert show on Sunday nights.

The format was unmatched in East Texas, and would still be unmatched. (I like the other CCM stations in the Tyler-Longview and Lufkin-Nacogdoches markets, but I liked "The Light" even better).

However, Waller's buying spree took its toll on the station. With other stations like KOOI, KKUS, KYKX, KFRO, et al at the disposal of the sales staff, KLJT was often overlooked when making a presentation to a client. The sales staff didn't believe in the product, therefore they didn't sell it.

Waller responded by changing it to a smooth jazz format, and later an AC format.

Newsflash... KLJT is pulling no greater numbers now (at least in the 12+) than it did as a Christian station. If it sells better, its because it is the only option of the sales staff (except for the Spanish stations in Longview).

Please, consider flipping back to Salem's Today's Christian Music. Keep Rhonda at Middays, hire a decent morning jock, and let the good times roll. With a little promotion, a 2.5-3.0 is not out of reach... and being a top-rated station is not unrealistic (look at KLTY).

And if you're worried about John Tesh, I understand there's a Christian version of his show as well.

And if you really feel frisky, you can bring back Oldies to KFRO.

Radio is about money... and you have to pay the bills and bring in a cash flow that will appreciate your property. I understand that. I just wish the bottom line didn't have to cost me my favorite station.

Thanks for the memories,

Signed,

A listener, turned DJ, who was blessed by "The Light."

Hey Sweep,
What is KVNE doing now? I thought they were doing a Contemporary Christian format? Are they more traditional these days? I remember when I lived in Tyler, KVNE was doing Contemporary and KGLY was doing Traditional/Inspirational. Both signals were incredible, too.

And, does KLTY (94.9 DFW) boom into Tyler? Just curious. I remember when they were on 94.1, you could pick them up in the mornings and evenings pretty good.

You also have KZLO doing their K-Love format on the old 65,000 watt Kilgore College frequency. I think there are at least 5 or 6 religiously oriented stations in the area, as well as whatever comes in from Dallas or Shreveport. I can't imagine the market supporting more.

KVNE and KZLO are both Contemporary Christian stations, and both to a good job at the format. KSWP out of Lufkin does well, also.

KLTY's signal does not come in well where I live, which is a pity.

Though I presented some thoughts on why I would think CCM would work on KLJT, the truth of the matter is that this topic is nothing more than my whining about losing my favorite station.

88.7 comes into Dallas pretty well when KTCU isn't on the air. But K-Love is hardly a cutting edge format, I would think that Tyler could support an Air-1 affiliate. An antenna should pull KLTY in, I can get them when I visit the Northwest side of Houston, their signal is incredible! Try a Pioneer Supertuner 3D car radio, KLTY is less than 100 miles from Tyler, and I have no trouble with KOOI in the car from Plano. So it works in the other direction.

I have two problems with KLTY reception. (1) Pine Trees and terrain. (2) The proximity of KVLL 94.7 to my place of residence.

The similarities to KLTY is what I liked about KLJT. Of course, they were both formatted by Salem Communications, so what should I have expected?

I've never had an issue with pine trees, but a Sangean HDT-1x has the best selectivity of any tuner since the Marantz 10B. I can get KOOI next to a local 106.7. I can also do that in my car with the Pioneer Supertuner 3D which uses the same chips. First adjacent reception is no longer a problem with these new chipsets.
