When I first moved back to Jacksonville in 1999, KLJT 102.3 FM was carrying Salem's "Today's Christian Music" format. They were all satellite except for morning drive.
The format was a KSWP-style Christian Contemporary format with various features, like "Reasons to Believe," "Inside the Music," and a live concert show on Sunday nights.
The format was unmatched in East Texas, and would still be unmatched. (I like the other CCM stations in the Tyler-Longview and Lufkin-Nacogdoches markets, but I liked "The Light" even better).
However, Waller's buying spree took its toll on the station. With other stations like KOOI, KKUS, KYKX, KFRO, et al at the disposal of the sales staff, KLJT was often overlooked when making a presentation to a client. The sales staff didn't believe in the product, therefore they didn't sell it.
Waller responded by changing it to a smooth jazz format, and later an AC format.
Newsflash... KLJT is pulling no greater numbers now (at least in the 12+) than it did as a Christian station. If it sells better, its because it is the only option of the sales staff (except for the Spanish stations in Longview).
Please, consider flipping back to Salem's Today's Christian Music. Keep Rhonda at Middays, hire a decent morning jock, and let the good times roll. With a little promotion, a 2.5-3.0 is not out of reach... and being a top-rated station is not unrealistic (look at KLTY).
And if you're worried about John Tesh, I understand there's a Christian version of his show as well.
And if you really feel frisky, you can bring back Oldies to KFRO.
Radio is about money... and you have to pay the bills and bring in a cash flow that will appreciate your property. I understand that. I just wish the bottom line didn't have to cost me my favorite station.
Thanks for the memories,
Signed,
A listener, turned DJ, who was blessed by "The Light."
