Note to KPHO ND re: "Breaking News"

On your noon newscast today (Wednesday, 10/13) the anchor announced a "breaking news" story about a fire in South Phoenix. Even had a helo shot of the building. Only thing was:

1. It wasn't on fire.
2. There wasn't a soul around (no firefighters, paramedics, cops, spectators).
3. No smoke either.
4. The ground wasn't even wet.

There was a hole in the roof where firefighters had obviously chopped their way in but it was also obvious the fire had been out for quite some time.

"Breaking news" is supposed to be about events underway not static shots of something that happened hours ago. Please make note to self so your news staff don't look like idiots.

KPHO is hoping to catch people flipping through the channels and that they will stop if the see "Breaking News". Unfortunately, they don't understand that if you cry wolf, people won't only not watch you but everyone else. It does nothing but kill television news for all stations in the market. It is the sign of a desperate tv station to over dramatize the news. The news is what it is, not what you promote it to be. I guess they were "Telling it like it is". What a joke.

Kpho is famous for doing teasers that lead to no where .When we had the super bowl here they did a story on the Glendale airport which is 4 miles away claiming there where planes setting on the tarmac with the doors open and no one around, giving it a terrorist twist to the story in how easy it would have been for a person to get in a plane and fly it into the stadium,my problem with the story is why would owners of the million dollar plane leave it un attended i am sure there where people watching the planes, but kpho wanted to make something out of nothing.

KPHO is a total joke right now. IMHO, it is quickly sinking below ABC15!

Although ABC15 also tends to also be flashy with heavy teasing of stories, they have come up with the very interesting NOW@9 concept. Rebecca and Susan are solid anchors. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if one of them eventually replaces Katie Raml. ABC15 also has a slew of reporters -- seemingly more than most other stations in the Valley. ABC15 has a lot of promise if they can keep building on it.

As you know all I made a big stink about this station. While I think they do have a few quality reporters, most of them have been let go, I actually think Nicole Crites does a wonderful job, from the past time I watched her. I refuse to watch a station, that runs around with slogans "telling it like it is", which was pointed on on this message board as grammatically correct. Until that station acknowledges and apologizes for their stealing material from a veteran and calling it there I will not watch KPHO anymore.

I wish Michael Hagerty could give us the ratings again. Oh how I miss those days.

Let me be clear - I was directing my comments at the News Director and not the on-air staff (assuming they are not one and the same) and especially not at Nicole.

I think they have some great reporters, but isn't it the producer who come up with how they want the story told or how it is teased to get you to watch the news segment.case in point Catherin Ayala(sorry forgot her last name) was at channel 12 she was a great reporter/anchor,but on kpho she seems like she is being forced to do the sound bite or teasers.

I've heard the "producer" label applied to so many people I don't know what it means any longer. My guess was there was one person who headed up the news department and he/she decided how to gather/edit and present the stories. That's who I was addressing.

Catherine Anaya does a good job as a news reader. I'm not sure if she has other duties as well (aside from the obvious teasers).

I'm going to take this thread to another angle:

Sorry to hear about Phoenix police officer Sgt Sean Drenth's death. The entire Valley grieves for your family.

I've been watching Fox10 Mornings for the past few weeks. This morning at 4:30 AM, Kristin Anderson signed on solo, with Cory McCloskey doing weather. Not sure if Andrea Robinson was doing traffic yet. After a few minutes of witty banter, they went to "Breaking News" to report on Sgt Drenth. I flipped to GMAZ and I could tell their reporter was at the middle/end of the story. I went to KPHO same thing, almost finished. I didn't switch to 12News.

At 5:00 and 5:30, I checked all 5 local news stations and Fox10 was the only one who didn't go directly to Breaking News. It was the worst at 6:00 AM. Rick D'Amico joined the other 3 and it took several minutes before they go to the story. I think this is the textbook example of Breaking News.

Sorry I'm just now writing this. Had to leave for work early and couldn't start writing it.

I usually catch some, but not all, of the Fox10 Morning Show and I haven't noticed them doing the "breaking news" bit except on things like forest fires in progress and sometimes traffic problems or crime. I usually tune in after 7 so if they've had a "breaking news" segment earlier it seems logical for them to do so again even to repeat an earlier story. A day later though or some new piece of information on an older story isn't breaking news. That is what I was referring to addressing KPHO.
