Note to NBC

The Carson estate owns the reruns. They're selling them as DVDs.

NBC has the rights to Conan...might as well burn them off while they can. It's a loss anyway.

You would get better ratings on the Tonight Show if you re-ran Carson....think about it.

No, really - you wouldn't. In my opinion, Carson was superior as a host and comedian to any of the current crop of hosts, and it would be great if we could re-animate Johnny and have him back doing new shows. But talk shows are of their time and about their time more than any other TV format. It's nostalgic fun to see Carson's old skits and some are 'timeless'...but others are not. It would even be fun to see his old monologues again and hear some old Nixon or Reagan jokes. But as a nightly thing, interest (and ratings) would drop off very quickly.

New jokes, old jokes...it's not as though a show of that format was going to top the ratings. Nor was it the point. In as much as the goal was to be more cost effective, the concept worked. Take the screaming affiliates out of the mix, and the increased leverage they had now, and the picture could have been a bit different.

My guess regarding The television of the future. TV's will have an ethernet port to connect directly to the internet. Networks will be piped in via broadband and they won't need local affiliates anymore.

No thanks to the streaming tv idea. I only get 150GB a month from my ISP with no other highspeed options near me. I would blow throw that in no time if I had to include my regular tv viewing with it.

In the future there won't be limitations like that.

There'll be DIFFERENT limitations...such as one's willingness to pay extra for lots of things like unlimited access to broadband, higher speeds, and the most popular content.

Back on topic...When Carson was King there were no other network talk shows of note in prime time, or against him. When 1130 came, the one liners..which were topical and funny put him on top.

Fast forward to today. Cable, wireless, the net. Jokes are spouted out almost as soon as the celebrity steps on his/her self. 1135 comes round and Jon Stewart has had his say...CNNFOXMSNBC have aired their salacious tidbits, with their appropriate left/right slant. Those who hang around for Dave, and to a certain extent, Jay, are old schoolers like me who are familiar with his schtick. Conan's audience was literally a later night crowd. There is a difference between the 1135PM and 1235PM crowd. Even more so by the time you get to Carson Daly. He wisely abandoned the studio format for pre taped bits that come across better.

The audience for the 1135 "talk show" is dwindling. Its nowhere near as cutting edge as when Johnny got in..and was smart enough to get out.

This whole Leno/Conan debacle has really opened my eyes to the idea of the late night shows. Jay's new show featured a bit called "Earn Your Plug". This is when I realized that I was just watching a commercial. All late night shows are just long commercials. Guests come on to talk about their newest project, and we watch it as if it's a real show. I remembered why I watch cable channels during late night. I can watch movie trailers on YouTube, listen to new albums on iTunes, and spend my evenings watching quality shows on cable. Hopefully this will be the beginning of the end for Late Night commercials-aka-Talk Shows. Start airing Mythbusters and I'll stay up all night watching.

You mean for all these years?? People have been plugging their stuff on radio & TV since the 30s.

The point is that their plugs can be entertaining, and the stuff they're plugging is also entertainment. Not refrigerators or sofas. That puts it in a different category, and allows them the opportunity to hawk their stuff for free...as long as they show up and subject themselves to the host's questioning.

Same thing with politicians. They can get free time on TV or radio selling their point of view or policy. But they must subject themselves to questions from the host, who might bring up subjects they'd rather not discuss. If the politicians wants to avoid questions, he must buy time, and that becomes a commercial.

I could do that right now. It's called TiVo. I can get my Netflix piped directly to my TV over the net, or load video from the internet onto the box through TiVo Desktop.

And if you've got digital cable with on-demand, you're basically watching IPTV right now, it's just not terribly transparent.

We're nearly there now.

I believe I've said this before elsewhere, but it bears repeating.....

TWO WRONGS DO NOT MAKE A RIGHT!!!!!

Cheers :D

Didn't seem to help The Family Channel in the afternoons years ago. :D
