Note to Spitzer..

The entertainment industry, including radio, is very important to this state. Squeezing little guys in Buffalo and Rochester might get headlines but alot of us little folks won't be able to vote for you since we've already left the state. Slamming Wall Street is one thing since they can re-finance there mansions in Greenwich or Jersey. Taking out five figure programmers, already under fire by a hell bent FCC, is another issue. The Post and Daily News won't give a -bleep- but those upstate headlines, at the expense of entertainers, reeks.

I'll repeat this. The entertainment industry is very important to New York State and this country as a whole. Entertainment is one of our largest exports. A major New York radio personality is going to take his home-based show out of your juristiction soon and he's going global. His name is Howard Stern. Limbaugh sits in a Palm Beach mansion popping pills and slamming you on hundreds of stations. Others will follow.

Even Democrats want less government in this day and age. Spitzer is out of touch and the Dems shouldn't put the jerk on a pedestal. He's simply bad for business.

And another note to Spitzer..I'm a fairly liberal Democrat.

Oh please. This is like saying the Gambino crime family helped keep employment figures up in downstate NY. Additionally, characterizing Entercom, Clear Channel, and other mega radio groups who have been implicated as "little guys" is nutty.

This is right out of the Republican Talking Points Playbook (tm).

Sure you are. :)

Your opinion is well stated, but I wholeheartedly disagree.

As a person who left radio to run a small family painting business, I believe that corporations and individuals need to be held acccountable. The parties involved are entitled to fair and equitable treatment under the law and in the courts. If and when they are judged to have violated the law, they must be held accountable.

I bid on jobs expecting to supply a product and service fairly and according to the rules that govern my line of work. We are a nation of laws. Society functions best when the law is observed by individuals and businesses large and small.

Circumventing the rules leads to chaos.

I'm a Republican and couldn't disagree more. As much as I distrust Spitzer's motives (he loves to grandstand whenever the cameras are rolling), and as I much as I generally dislike his politics, I can't fault him for enforcing the law.
Who are these "little guys" you mention? Certainly not Entercom and the others who have actively courted fat checks from indie promoters to pump their bottom lines. And certainly not Program Directors who know the law but don't seem to have the moral courage to say no to all the hookers, blow, trips and big bills that are being waved in their faces, all so a record that was probably gonna be a hit anyway gets a good first week.
The business is the business and it's not gonna change; but the law is also the law and sometimes someone has to be reminded of that. PDs and radio companies should remind themselves that opportunists like Spitzer do come around from time to time and they ought to keep their noses clean.

O.K. SONY cuts a 10 million dollar deal to escape Spitzer. And what do you think Spitzer wants in return? A fall guy! And who gets screwed? An Upstate broadcaster.

It's not in SONY's interests to finger ANYONE in the nations most important market, New York City, the media capital of the world. So who gets the blame within the Attorney Generals juristiction? A Buffalo programmer that some SONY dweeb fingered so he could get off the hook and kiss ass.

And do you think any real significant payola-type activities are going on in places like Buffalo, where, according to SONY, some guy got a little greedy! C'mon. Spitzer would never become Governor by nailing anyone in NYC, a place where Payola actually pays. He'd be crucified by the Manhatten media.

Just a reminder..Erie County is broke. Perhaps I've illustrated just how downstate politicians use upstate as a dumping ground.

Spitzer hasn't filed a single charge against an upstate broadcaster. Dave Universal's name was prominent in the information released, but a number of radio stations, including stations in NYC were also named. The only one "screwed" so far is SONY, who's coughing up $10,000,000. What does Spitzer want? The Governor's mansion.

One might conclude that either DU was the most demanding, or that he p*ssed off the most people at SONY. Once again, he wasn't the only one "fingered". His name is the most prominent because he has responded in the media, and taken on Spitzer in the court of public opinion. The other guys have learned to STFU and let their attorneys do the talking.

Once again, Spitzer hasn't charged DU with anything. His current target is SONY. Who's next remains to be seen. He has provided indications of payola in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany, NYC, and other locations outside NY.

I don't understand how Erie County's fiscal situation - which is neither unprecedented or unique - has anything to do with the payola probe. Erie County's fiscal situation is the result of poor management locally and Albany's mandates for statewide programs that have to be funded by local governments.

You obviously either haven't gathered the facts, haven't assimilated them, or aren't interest in facts that don't support your point of view.
