Notes on BOB FM in Lafayette

BOB-FM:
Does BOB-FM have somebody who can go into their engineering closet and TURN IT UP? What's the deal? Satellite volume? Power issue?
Just think how well they'd be doing once they get somebody who cares about how it sounds technically and not just format-wise...
Oh yeah, they were off AGAIN today after the heavy rain.

My intention is not to get off on another AMP jag, but they just did SOOOOO well with BOB-FM in the latest book, it would be a shame to jeopardize a successful property with shoddy EQ, processing, dish positioning, etc.

My two problems with BOB-FM...

1) Just like sister station The Rocket, seems to go off air once it starts raining more than a sprinkle.
2) The liners between every song? Annoying. I'm sure that's probably the fault of the syndicator, but I don't need to hear a BOB-FM liner every 3-5 minutes.

Speaking of The Rocket - Tuesday's liners and weather and everything else running during B&T on Wednesday morning. Pathetic. As with most radio and one tv station in Lafayette.

The engineer is out of South Bend. So when BOB goes off the air, it's at least a few hours before he can drive there and get it back on.

Amp does not have an engineer on staff in Lafayette.

Wiener,
Do you mean format-wise or air quality-wise? Format-wise they are worlds apart.
I don't listen to WIBN enough to have an opinion about how their signal, etc. sounds, though.

Wwood,
I've heard that's a big problem with the Rocket running outdated liners and weather. That's why they lost the Newschannel 18 news exclusivity to Schurz: They would run the same news for days at a time.

Again, now that they have a format that's working well initially, it would be a shame to sabatoge the chance of it's success with shabby or lack of engineering and programming staff.

LU, we are talking about amp, remember. It doesn't matter how well it is working or what it's chances are, it will get broken.

Technically, We were talking about how annoying radio stations have become in Lafayette. The DJs have become button pusher - one line readers....that are no better than a station on the bird a thousand miles away that needs to be turned up, or the station on the outshirts of the Lafayette Market with no coverage signal. No different! Both have a faulty signal in Lafayette.

Lafayette Unplugged - Local news "exclusively" provided by the only tv station in town. Big Deal! I would never brag about that. Newsroom please.....call the tv station with your press release. Lafayette needs more news sources and the radio station's dj should be a voice in the community. Not just a prize card giveaway reader - button pusher :-[ :-[

Totally agree dwiener. Well said. Are the suits and consultants shutting down the jocks creativity that much or is it a lack of talent and/or boredom?
Some really good talent used to come out of and even to Lafayette. I guess that goes for the business in general.

Nature's anti-broadcast station worst... A big-time "downpour" and the associated lightning...

Nature’s fury [a heavy rain and sky-flashes] is well-known to knock-out the KU-band sat transmission to a subscibing station... That is NO shortfall of that station’s technical staff – a qualified and capable technician would fire CDs and wait for the storm to subside... It’s merely a demonstration of nature and mortal-man's capacity to counter it..

So AMP, ‘load that one-terabyte PC with good music ‘n do your own thing... ‘WHY is that so-ooo hard?

I doubt that a Waitt is using KU Band ... most 24/7 satellite systems use L band with a 3 meter dish. Ku band would be like Dish Network.

I don't pretend to understand all the engineering aspects.

But a junior high school kid with an Ipod would be able to tell that "Hey! This station is the quietest on the dial and the sound is as thin as one of my mom's old TDK cassettes! Why would anybody listen to it or take it seriously?"

My best guess is that the AMP engineer from South Bend does not want to make that 3-hour trip more than once a month (or two?) so he'll get to it when he gets to it.

What a shame...

Would make more sense to have a staffer from Bloomington handle engineering in Lafayette ... considerably shorter drive.

Assuming that AMP has engineers in Bloomington.

Again, a real shame that a powerful multi-station outfit cannot match the sound quality of the local high school station.

It will ultimately cost them listenership if not fixed quickly and they'll wonder why their initial Arbitron successes disappeared so quickly (which will lead to another knee-jerk format change when all they had to do was have somebody take 15 minutes to FIX THE SOUND).

It reminds me of my buddy who used to give me really awesome studio demos of his music but he would give them to me on old cassette tapes from the store from Donna Summer or something with tape over the tiny holes!!

Funny but sooooooo tragic and misguided. The FCC should have a special rule that says if you are not using the frequency sound quality to the best of your ability, you get suspended, fined, or jerked off the air until you get it fixed.

I've heard from a little bird that BOB is broke...on a backup processor and other technichal mumbo-jumbo that I can't even begin to pronounce...maybe just give 'em some time to get it fixed???? Lightning can do that to you sometimes :'(

Which lightning are you talking about? From June? And they STILL haven't figured out a way to get back up to full speed? Did they get it fixed and then get hit AGAIN?

Even the most financially-strapped operations can figure things out in less than two months time, right?

How 'bout we give them ANOTHER 2 months? How 'bout 3 ? ???

Unless the shack is ON FIRE, I just don't buy any of that. I still think it's a "we'll get to it when we get to it" proposition from the travelling engineers... ::)
