Notes on South Jersey's Forgotten Little Stations

Just got back from a trip to South Jersey for the first time in awhile, and wanted to make a comment on three forgotten little stations in South Jersey:

1) WMID-AM ... is this station locally programmed or satellite? I heard tons of music back to back with liners in between and hardly any DJ's. Sounded like a bunch of oldies thrown in a computer and hit "shuffle."

2) WCMC-AM ... definitely on a satellite, but a suggestion. The guy who does the local liners in between that say "WCMC," you can hardly hear him. It sounds like the VU meter is hardly moving when he speaks whereas the satellite levels are just fine.

3) WCFA-LP ... never knew this existed. Low power local, volunteer-run jazz station in Cape May since 2006 with a decent coverage. Held onto it up to near Avalon and nice mix of old and new jazz. Always have thought there was a hole for jazz in far south Jersey since the demise of WSAX. At least in Philly, you still have jazz at night on WRTI but I couldn't pick up any WRTI translators too well down that far.

Comments anyone?

Locally programmed. No DJs, no news. Song, liner (sometimes for the old 1340 and 1230 simulcast), song, liner, 10 minute spot break, song, liner... and Phillies.

And the widest, best "oh wow" oldies playlist on the planet...

Oh I agree with you there. I heard some amazing old songs, but at the same time, I never quite heard a station like this. All it was, was music and liners and a legal ID at the top of the hour. No news. No voicetracks. Heck, I hardly even heard commercials if at all. Does this station make any money? Is there a point? Don't get me wrong, it's cool music that no one plays anymore, but it's strange.

I just wish WMID processing wasn't so flat...weak bottom end and too leveled, but a sweet high end (as sweet as 9Kc will buy ya). Also the music is pitched way too fast on most tunes. I heard Lou Christie's "Rhapsody In The Rain". and The Angels backup vocals sounded like Alvin and The chipmunks. It's nice to have a station available in the car with a w i d e playlist.

If you want to hear some great oldies, check out 4kz.com.au in austrailia. On saturday afternoons 3pm to 9pm EST DJ Greg Vuleta really finds some great oldies! Some times he does go back to the early 50s and 40s but it is called the Musical Museum and you never know what he will play next. He does his own commercials and he is the cream of DJs, he is an artist at his craft. They also have a special feature called It Happened Today which is really interesting. My new computer can't get the station but my old computer can. Give it a listen!

Speaking of forgotten little stations...they fixed WGYM's horrible modulation problem and it's now actually listenable in Hammonton. Doesn't make it to Mays Landing though.

You Mean they Finally put the plate caps back on the Tubes and Turned on the HV supply...
It had been Running just on the Oscillator for the longest time.with about 6 watts out.
Old Tired transmitter
I wonder If they actually replaced it... the Ground field was all torn up from kids Quadding and motorcrossing in the field... Hey Never knew catus grew in the Sands of NJ.

They way WMID is decribed it sounds like the old WPDQ-FM in Howell NJ. They were eventually purchased by a Christian Radio Network.
