Nothing Compares

How does any guitar riff ever compare to the last minute of Back On the Road Again by REO Speedwagon.

There's no comparison. The last minute of "Back On the Road Again" by REO Speedwagon is a solo, not a riff. A riff is a short repeated passage of only a few bars. Solos are often based on expanding on riffs. A great example is the song "Layla". There's the basic riff and the guitar solos and duets all spring from that riff. That acoustic guitar chord pattern from "I'm Your Captain" is another example of a riff.

As guitar solos go, the one from "Back on the Road Again" is good, but there are dozens if not hundreds that are equally as good, if not better. The truth is, that guitar solo is repititious, a little muddy in spots, and not particularly innovative. There's a great deal of reliance of a few sustained notes at high volume/distortion levels that give the false impression of something going on, but little real meat.

It's not bad. That's a good song. But it's not a great song by any stretch of the imagination.

I guess beauty, and music, is in the eye, (and ear) of the beholder

When it comes to beauty, yes. When it comes to basic terminology, like knowing the difference between a riff and a solo, no. Things like that are what they are, and aren't matters of opinion.

Whatever you say. I'm no music expert, I just love the stuff

Remember that you said that.
