Nothing to see here. Move on.

“Nearly 40% of people listen to online-only audio services like Pandora or Spotify on their smartphones”, says Pew.

Well, DUH. What other option do they have? There's no FM tuner in most phones, and most of them only cary one device - their smart phone. Extra storage is more likely to go to pictures, video, and other media than music since they can get that from an app.

"Even more worrisome for AM/FM radio, in-car listening via smartphones nearly doubled in the last year to 11% of people who own cellphones."

Which means that 89% of the people in their cars are still listening to radio. They're probably the same people who listened to CDs or cassettes in an earlier era. No surprise there.

Is there any other media in the world that reaches nearly 90 of the audience that wrings its hands about "the future" as much as radio does?

Perhaps we need to concentrate more on the positive, and follow this advice:

To me the interesting part of that story is that growth in smartphone usage is one of the things that's killing Pandora. Because they have to pay the royalty for usage, and are unable to gain any revenue from users by either a fee or advertising. It's all expense. And users know it.
