Notorious BIG on KBIG?

Yes, heard Mo Money Mo Problems at 4:15 pm.

Like I said, they have gone off the deep end for a AC.
______________

This is nothing new: They have been known to slip in a Pop-friendly Hip-Hop track from the 80s and 90s from time to time.

Personally I wish they would make their mind what on direction they want to take with that station.

LAPD tell the truth ! Who did that to B.I.G.

The questions become:

1. Will the ratings reflect that there are enough people like you?

2. Is there enough product to support the idea?

3. Will inclusion of that music drive away listeners in sufficient numbers to make it a bad idea?
______________

We used to play that at Q106, and we were a Hot AC type station. Since that song is 7 years old now, I don't find it all that unusual. However, what IS unusual, is that we used to daypart those songs. Mark Todd had a rule that we could not play any rap music during the day. But again since that song is a bit stale now, it probably is not that big a deal. But I would definately define KBIG as a second hand KIIS (all the stuff that KIIS used to play).

By the way, I hope the format at KBIG spreads, I'd love to hear a station like that out here!

If there's a single subgenre of music that can drive a substantial number of people off of a radio station, it's undoubtedly Gangsta Rap! I don't think that even Disco music was as polarizing as what passes for Hip Hop music today.

I wouldn't exactly call "Mo Money Mo Problems" gangsta rap. It's a pop song now ... very melodic - and has a sample of "I'm Coming Out" by Diana Ross - which is a song KBIG plays ...

And I don't get how you can say hip-hop is polarizing. It's more widely accepted than ever.

Agreed. And this isn't exactly a first for KBIG - they play songs such as "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It" more often than you might think. KBIG, to me, has always been a rhythmic A/C (Debbie Deb isn't exactly typical A/C gold, either), and pop-rap smashes such as "Jiggy" and "Mo Money" fit their niche, now.

I agree that it's a pop song now. Another thing to consider is that the 16 year old girl who liked the song as a current is now 25 and entering the Hot AC demo.

I agree, but I also think it's a bad sign for hip hop. When all adults hated rap I knew it would be around for a long time. Now that it's accepted by the masses I think it has peaked and will slowly decline. Kind of like rock, it grew when parents hated it and peaked (and eventually declined) when parents accepted and enjoyed it.

There is NOTHING urban about GJWI, or anything else Will Smith does. Sorry, there just isn't.

WRONG!!!! "Getting Jiggy With It" is much more pure Hip Hop/Rap then most of the stuff that passes off as Hip Hop today. "Gettin Jiggy With It" has the type of sound that was all too common in Rap's early years when it was just a black thing: A Disco hit sample, and fun Rap lyrics. If you don't think "Gettin Jiggy With It" is Urban, then neither are the Sugarhill Gang, De La Soul, Run DMC, or even Puff Daddy.

"Gettin Jiggy With It" is simply a very polished (read, formulaic/by the numbers) cross-over friendly type of Urban record. Then again, so were James Brown's records...
Edited by CHRles on 02/15/06 07:03 AM.

I heard Nelly on KBIG during the daytime Monday. It's R&Bish, but also something I wouldn't have expected KBIG to play..

The problem sir, is your definition of Hip Hop.
Perhaps that WAS Hip-Hop when it came out. But that was 8 or 9 years ago!!!

Perhaps you mean Rythemic. But this this is a subjective matter of opinion anyway, and I wouldn't group any of those artists you mentioned in the same category.

There are no "right" or "wrong" answers here.

Acutually, Rock music, or at least Modern Rock music, isn't in decline as sales of it as a percentage of all album sales has been rising. As for Gangsta Rap, it's polarizing because it relentlessly pushes a nihilistic worldview of casual violence, misogyny and crass materialism that seems childish, and worse, to an increasing number of young people (or at least to the ones who believe they have a viable future in this life) I've heard from on the subject. The better educated you are, the less likely you probably are to regard women as "whores" or to think that the only goal in life is to "get rich or die trying".

I just got back from a week in LA. Gwen Stefani is GUARANTEED to be on every 15 minutes on at least one station there. Its amazing. I digress....

I found myself on 104.3 more than any other station. Its all upbeat tracks... the best of Jammin Oldies... 80s and 90s mainstream and limited new stuff (which is GREAT because music is crap right now).

I hate CC with every bone in my body... but this station is great. They just need to drop "THE NEW" in the name... I know they are trying to show theres been an adjustment but KBIG is hardly new. Still... 104.3.. Pure Gold.
