Notre Dame home opener -- Peacock Premium only

Nobody can afford it. That's what happens when you pay athletes $20 million or more a year. For years, non sports fans subsidized sports on ESPN because of cable fees. Now that's drying up. So the next frontier is subscription channels. So that puts the ball in the court of the sports fans. How much is too much if you're a fan of a certain team? It's not the network's problem any more. It's not YOUR problem.
The NFL signed a new 10 year deal. The networks knew what they were getting into. They could have said no.

Then what would have happened? Amazon or Apple would pay for it, and you'd be forced to spend $20 a month.

Sooner or later you will pay. The only question is how much. But with salaries going up, the answer is MORE.

NBC and/or CBS may balk next time, but as long as Disney and the Murdochs have more money than God, they'll pony up whatever the leagues demand.
 
Ultimately, nothing is forever. Just like radio station valuations 20 years ago, the same could happen to high sports rights and pro sports salaries. The balloon will pop.

But not before it gets blown up some more over the next few years.

The sports leagues are monopolies and can control their competition. Radio stations can't.

Scarcity drives up price. The leagues understand that. They also control expansion for that reason.
 
And in just a few weeks, we'll get to see of The Closing Ceremonies of The Para Olympic Games and a Breeders Cup Qualifying Race draw the same audience as The Norte Dame Home Opener, or perhaps these are the sacrificial lambs to get more Peacock sign-ups as we get closer to Game Day.
