Nov PPM

As expected the election helped KFBK remain #1 with 12+ persons in Nov..
a 7.8 to 8.0....
In the battle for top sports staton KCTC/ESPN beat out KHTK...that could be
a first, though KHTK keeps adding non sports programming..
KCTC with a 2.1 share 12+ 184,000 cume...KHTK at 2.0 share only 156,000
cume...KNBR with the Giants tied KHTK at 2.0 but had a bigger cume at 174,000.....station on the down slide in Nov...the Mix 5.9 to 4.8..(thank goodness xmas is here for them) KNCI 4.8-4.3...Jack FM and KZZO also took
down hits....talker KSTE goes up a half point thanks to the elections...
Congrats to Entercom for having top group with KRXQ, KSEG and KDND
coming in second, third and fourth.

Looks like KCTC carrying the ESPN feed of the MLB playoffs paid off for them... I can't get KNBR in where I live so it was nice to be able to hear the games... great hearing Jon Miller calling the Giants games in the WS, almost made Joe Morgan's babbling tolerable!

You said in a previous post that Placer County was the conservative capital...(in reference to 950 carrying Dr. Laura)
If that's the case, then why did KFBK and KSTE get an election boost and not KTKZ-Intelligent Conservative Talk? (from your opinion of course)

KTKZ has added 25,000 listeners since Sept during the election cycle. But of PPM is more than just
Placer County...Sacramento County is certainly more liberal. KAHI 950 has to be conservative because
their signal doesn't get out of Placer County...and Placer and now taken over Orange County as the most
conservative county in the state...I'm sure KTKZ does well in Rocklin, Loomis, Granite Bay and Auburn

KHTK just getting ready for the day when the Kings bolt town.

I can't believe KHTK is adding non sports shows in case the Kings take off...
They just realize that, with a bad Kings team, there's not enough sports to
get ratings in Sac. But remember, KHTK was a 4 to 5 share 12+ station
when the Kings were hot in 2001-02,03....and even then they werent all
sports with Don and Mike in the afternoon getting big numbers...
Sports stations on FMs are doing great across the country...Detroit sports is
#1...#3 in Dallas...KNBR was number in SF in Nov with the Giants...a well
programmed sports station can get numbers if it creates a good guy culture..
Too bad KCTC isn't making an effort at it.

It's full-ESPN except for Dan Patrick, who they just moved to 10a-1p. They also carry the Niners games, which I think qualifies as semi-local programming.

ESPN 1320 does a high school sports show on Sat mornings. Production value is par for the market, content is a little better.

Yes! Congrats to Entercom! I am enjoying Classic Rock A-Z on The Eagle. Of course 98Rock's Pat, Dog and Joe do great radio. As I always say, nothing is better than live and local talent.

I'm missing Mix96's Saturday at the 70's (but I said that last year).

I see Don G's numbers are trending down. The last 4 books for his target demo= men 25-54: Aug: 7.0 Sept: 6.0 Oct: 5.7 Nov: 4.9. Bummer.

Like Travis, I think an FM talk would really rock Sac and the Foothills. Like 97.1 KLSX before the flip.

What would be interesting is if an FM Talker could pick up RAD, in fact the whole line-up could be made from DJs and hosts currently in the area

There is a reason why KLSX is no longer talk. And they were probably one of the most successful FM talk stations around.

Sacramento did have FM Talk, about 10 years ago when CBS brought Stern to the market on 93.7. However, it didn't last long. It's obviously an expensive format to maintain, but, like anything, if programmed/managed correctly could be a big revenue source. KRXQs talent and numbers are examples. WTKS, a FM talker in Orlando is still running (Clear Channel owned also, if you can believe it) and they feature some solid local talent during dayparts that have established a heritage over the years. That's a big piece to KLSX's survival during 12/13 years; Sterns show as an anchor. When Stern left, CBS's FM talk format as a whole fell apart.

There is definitely some good local talent that deserves to be on FM...Armstrong and Getty & Don Geronimo are two who come to mind immediately. There's also some decent syndicated stuff out there...I would love to hear Phil Hendrie on a local outlet. Plus, they could run John & Jeff overnights.

FM Talk is a viable product, if the suits are willing to make the investment and the talent is available. However, my prediction is it will never come back to Sacto.

Excellent points D! When I can, I listen to Armstrong & Getty. I LMAO at most of their stuff. Phil Hendrie is a huge talent. Many people don't know he does all the voices. Phil and I are alumni of the same high school. I'm not a big fan of John and Jeff. I realize they have a large following.

Unfortunately, no matter what business your in the bean counters make all the decisions. Most not for the better...

Actually, FM Talk in Sac began to fall apart with O&A's disastrous brush with the Catholic church, well before Stern's departure from terrestrial radio. By the time Stern left, the station had been a music station for years.

IMHO, there are a few reasons why that sort of FM Talk will never make it back to Sac anytime soon:

- The area is still too conservative to garner a large enough fan base.
- The programming is far too expensive, beit local or syndicated.
- The liability of FM Talk talent of the edgier kind is through the roof.

Now, bring folks like Phil Hendrie aboard and there might be a chance for an FM Talker geared towards a more mature audience (not 18-34).

I think there is room for another conservative talk show host, especially if they talk about more than just politics. Why not go local when Dr. Laura goes off terrestrial radio? Oh that's right, then you would have to pay local talent. ;)

Phil Hendrie would be great to have on nights. I would rather listen to Phil than Coast to Coast. That show hasn't been the same since Art Bell stopped doing it. Just sayin'.

As for liability, there is no way you're not going to piss someone off on a talk station. I learned a long time ago you can't make everyone happy in radio, whether it's talk or a music format. Aaaand in California, you always have to beware of the lawyers...
