Just a few random TV related events that happened on November 15. Discuss or comment as you please……
1929: Actor Ed Asner (The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Lou Grant) is born (as Yitzhak Eddie Asner) in Kansas City, Kansas.
1949: KRON-TV (channel 4) signs on in San Francisco.
1952: CBS cuts the ribbon on Television City in Hollywood at 7800 Beverly Boulevard (the corner of Beverly and Fairfax Ave.). It was built on the former site of Gilmore Stadium.
1953: WIBW-TV (channel 13) launches in Topeka as Kansas’ second TV station.
1953: WFIE (channel 62, later channel 14) begins broadcasting in Evansville, Indiana.
1953: WRBL-TV (channel 3) signs on in Columbus, Georgia as the market’s second TV station.
1964: Winnipeg, Manitoba’s CBWT (formerly channel 3) and CBWFT (formerly channel 6) swap channels.
1969: Both ITV and BBC1 in the U.K. begin regularly scheduled color transmissions. (Color had been introduced on BBC2 two years earlier.)
1977: Actor Sean Murray (JAG, NCIS) is born in Bethesda, Maryland. (It’s probably not a coincidence that he has turned up in two of Donald Bellisario’s TV series: he’s Bellisario’s stepson...)
1998: Digital terrestrial television launches in the U.K.
2004: As the cold opening of ABC’s Monday Night Football broadcast, Actress Nicolette Sheridan and football player Terrell Owens appear in a sexually suggestive Desperate Housewives-inspired sketch, showing Sheridan dropping a towel to attract the attention of Owens. It is widely condemned as being inappropriate and in poor taste (though obviously not to the millions who downloaded the clip on the Internet), and led to Sheridan’s being cited by the FCC. ABC was forced to apologize for airing it, but the citation against Sheridan was later dropped.
(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..)
