Just a few random TV related events that happened on November 18. Discuss or comment as you please……

1924: Actor Les Lye (You Can’t Do That on Television) is born in Toronto, Ontario.

1942: Actress Linda Evans (The Big Valley, Dynasty) is born (as Linda Evenstad) in Hartford, Connecticut.

1942: Actress Susan Sullivan (Falcon Crest, Dharma & Greg) is born in New York City.

1951: Edward R. Murrow on CBS’ See It Now presents the first live coast-to-coast commercial television broadcast in the US, showing a split screen view of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

1953: Actor/comedian Kevin Nealon (Saturday Night Live, Weeds) is born in St. Louis, Missouri.

1955: CKNX-TV begins broadcasting on channel 8 in Wingham, Ontario.

1992: The infamous (and very funny) Seinfeld episode “The Contest” first airs on NBC.

1998: The Powerpuff Girls premieres on Cartoon Network

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)
 
This infamous historic event would be the subject of a made-for-TV movie on CBS in 1980:

1978: In Jonestown, Guyana, cult leader Jim Jones leads his People's Temple cult in a mass murder-suicide that claims 918 lives (including over 270 children). Before the mass suicide, California Congressman Leo Ryan was murdered by the cult members in an ambush.

This short aircheck from WBBM-2 Chicago's 6PM news (with Bill Kurtis and Walter Jacobson) from Nov. 24, 1978 (6 days after the suicides) sums up the aftermath of the Jonestown massacre (although an aircheck, it is unfortunate that we aren't able to see more of Kurtis' report of the Jonestown tragedy, and particularly Walter Jacobson's commentary too).

...as I recall, this incident would also become the first story widely associated with Jessica Savitch on NBC; she was the anchor on duty that weekend and handled the various special reports/bulletins as they trickled in that Sunday...
 
Then-ET co-host Ron Hendren's interesting story on the then-emerging home video scene appeared on "Entertainment Tonight" 29 years ago tomorrow (Nov. 18, 1981) during its first season. The clip is on YouTube:
