1955: KTVO (channel 3) signs on in Ottumwa, Iowa.
1963: Actress Nicollette Sheridan (Knots Landing, Desperate Housewives) is born in Worthing, Sussex, England.
1965: Actor Alexander Siddig (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) is born in Sudan. His full birth name is (I kid you not) Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig El Abderahman El Mohammed Ahmed El Abdel Karim El Mahdi. (Try fitting THAT on a driver’s license!!) During the first 3 seasons of ST
S9, he was credited under the shortened name Siddig El Fadil, subsequently changing his stage name to Alexander Siddig, as he thought it would be less confusing and easier to pronounce by American tongues. (On set, however, he was called “Sid” by colleagues.)
1972: CBS airs the second episode of a two-part Maude in which the title character, finding herself pregnant at the age of 47, decides to get an abortion (which had just recently been made legal in New York). The controversial episodes would lead to massive protests from clergy, and over 30 affiliates dropping the series from their schedules.
1980: The famous “Who Shot J.R?” story arc on CBS’s Dallas is resolved with the revelation that Sue Ellen's sister Kristin had done the deed in a fit of anger. The widespread publicity and massive ratings would usher in a trend of TV shows ending a season with an unresolved "cliffhanger."
1992: In a “Wayne's World” sketch on Saturday Night Live, the characters Wayne and Garth (Mike Myers and Dana Carvey) make fun of Chelsea Clinton, implying that she was considerably less than attractive. The joke would subsequently be edited out of all repeats and syndication rebroadcasts of the sketch.
1993: Actor Bill Bixby (My Favorite Martian, The Courtship of Eddie’s Father, The Incredible Hulk) dies in Century City, California, aged 59.
(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..)
