November 26: This Day in TV History

Just a few random TV related events that happened on November 26. Discuss or comment as you please……

1938: Impressionist Rich Little is born in Ottawa, Ontario.

1953: KBOI-TV (channel 2, now KBCI-TV) signs on in Boise, Idaho.

1956: The original version of The Price is Right (hosted by Bill Cullen) premieres on NBC.

1964: Television arrives in Pakistan as broadcasts commence in the cities of Lahore and Dhaka.

1968: CFWH-TV (channel 6) begins broadcasting in Whitehorse, Yukon. It is the second in a series of CBC transmitters providing limited television service to remote and northern communities. The programming (known as the “Frontier Coverage Package”) initially consists of 4 hours of black-and-white videotaped material per day – tapes that were circulated from station to station and aired anywhere from a week to a month after their original CBC broadcasts. (The practice would end in 1973 when these remote stations were linked to the Anik satellite, providing 12 hours per day of color programming.)

1977: At 5:12 p.m. BST, the audio portion of a Southern Television news broadcast on British television channel ITV is interrupted by the electronically disguised voice of someone calling himself "Vrillon of the Ashtar Galactic Command." The “alien” warns viewers about the dangers of nuclear weapons and states that humanity has “but a short time to learn to live together in peace and goodwill” before destroying itself. The source of the audio hijacking has never been determined. While certainly a prank or hoax, nevertheless there are some “UFOlogists” who still believe the signal had an extraterrestrial origin.

1989: America's Funniest Home Videos premieres on ABC.

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)

...any idea how widely publicised this incident was, and if it made space in U.S. newspapers at the time? The reason I ask is that on another thread -- http://www.radio-info.com/smf/index.php/topic,112259.0.html -- I opined that the famous 1987 "Max Headroom" incident brought up on the history listing of November 22nd, in which the signals of WGN-TV and WTTW in Chicago were interrupted by a signal pirate wearing a Max Headroom mask, was possibly inspired by a sequence in the Alan Arkin movie Simon in which the title character does the same thing to the three network evening newscasts. Contemporary news reports about the Max Headroom incident are at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NteORzWN7o and a complete aircheck of the WTTW break-in is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cycVTXtm0U0 with improved quality over the clips of the incident that have appeared on YouTube previously. Now I'm wondering if this Southern Television incident may have inspired Marshall Brickman to write the signal piracy element into his script for Simon as a result of seeing a news item about it...

Sorry to "bump" this a few weeks early, but in trawling through the extensive files on the Meldrum site (U.K.), I found that someone had posted an audio file of this incident here:

http://pp.meldrum.co.uk/show.asp?id=7972

It includes, following the "space message," clips of a subsequent short apology by the network, as well as a more thorough report on the incident from that evening's newscast. The comments appended to the download page are interesting as well.

I imagine this was pretty scary in a "War of the Worlds" sort of way to viewers!!

Wouldn't mind seeing that one-hour pilot/special pop up on Youtube. Some of the funniest ones were with that pilot.

I haven't found the entire AFHV pilot on YouTube, but here's a two-part montage that someone posted there (apparently just some highlights of the pilot episode):

Back in the days when the "funniest home videos" were truly accidental and not "staged" (as it seemed we saw more of as the series progressed).

Back in 1990 I actually had sent a video to these people only to get a "Thanks but...ah NO" letter from ABC. I was mad back then but over the years I can understand why. Back in 1986 with my then-brand new camcorder I had got footage of actor Hal Linden, complete of him wearing his jacket for his then show "Blacke's Magic". Hal was looking around and around then thinking nobody was watching him....he picked his nose. His finger was way up there.

Obviously he didn't see me with camera in tow. ;D

Yep. When you are ABC you can't afford to get the Screen Actors Guild
all riled-up at you.

Kinda reminds me of that video clip of Lucie Arnaz that pops up on You Tube from time to time that someone had managed to get on their camera. Lucie goes into some restaurant screaming "I am Lucille Ball's daughter..LUCIE ARNAZ..now the rest of you GET THE HELL OUT...I AM THE DAUGHTER OF LUCY GOD DAMN IT ! ! !"..then the clip shows the customers of the restaurant making their exits.

I guess You Tube is concerned about the Screen Actors Guild too as every every single time this pops up on You Tube, the clip ends up getting deleted rather quick sometimes within HOURS of it being uploaded..and it isn't over "copyrights".
