1924: Musician and parodist Allan Sherman is born in Chicago.

1926: Actor Richard Crenna (Our Miss Brooks, The Real McCoys, Slattery’s People) is born in Los Angeles.

1927
: Actor Robert Guillaume (Soap, Benson, SportsNight) is born (as Robert Peter Williams) in St. Louis, Missouri.

1929: TV legend Dick Clark is born in Mount Vernon, New York.

1954: CKCW-TV (channel 2) signs on in Moncton, New Brunswick.

1958: WKBW-TV (channel 7) begins operating in Buffalo, New York.

1977: Journalist Eric Sevareid airs his final commentary on The CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite, retiring after a 48-year career with CBS News.

1982: Actress Elisha Cuthbert (24) is born in Calgary, Alberta.

2004: After 74 consecutive wins, Ken Jennings finally loses on Jeopardy! (to competitor Nancy Zerg).

2007: Daredevil Robert Craig "Evel" Knievel dies in Clearwater, Florida, aged 69.

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)

...anyone know if his speech is improving any from that stroke he suffered? (I hope that, if it isn't, he'll simply stay home this year and pass up the New Year's Eve Times Square ball drop)...

Has anyone heard anything more about how Dick Clark is doing after his stroke last year? Will he be back for New Year's Eve in Times Square in about a month, or are his days of emceeing the ball drop at midnight over?

...kinda surprised that I didn't catch this one back when. In addition to his musical parodies, Sherman created my favourite '50s panel game show, I've Got a Secret, and served as the program's producer from its premiere in 1952 until a disasterous incident involving Tony Curtis' appearance in June 1958. He also produced What's Going On? for ABC and Your Surprise Package for CBS...
