November Nielsens

DMA #53: Providence

WJAR lost first place at 11 for the first time in 13 years.

#1: WPRI 6.7/13
#2: WJAR 6.0/12
#3: WLNE 2.7/5

It probably also has to do with WJAR's sucky product though.

Chicago
"WMAQ's 10 p.m. news sank to a solid third place Monday through Friday among the three network stations with competing late newscasts"
http://www.suntimes.com/business/lazare/1913134,CST-NWS-lew01TV.article

Baltimore
"WBAL, which use to be neck-and-neck with WJZ at the 11 p.m. newscast, an affilate's most lucrative, is now a distant second to the CBS-owned station."
http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/zontv/2009/11/november_sweeps_tv_wjz_wbal_wm.html

Orlando
"11PM: WFTV with 81,700 homes, WKMG with 74,800, WESH with 55,200 and WOFL with 15,800."
http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/en...how-orlando-stations-fared-in-households.html

Buffalo
"The so-called Jay Leno Effect has dropped Channel 2 News into third place at 11 p. m., behind news leader Channel 4 and second place Channel 7."

Dallas-Fort Worth
10pm newscasts, total viewers
KTVT/11, CBS -- 3.364 rating (228,291 viewers)
WFAA/8, ABC -- 3.329 rating (225,916 viewers)
KXAS/5, NBC -- 2.046 rating (138,848 viewers)
KUVN/23, Univision -- (ran fourth at 10 p.m. in total viewers, no specifics listed)
KDFW/4, Fox -- 1.112 rating (75,464 viewers)

Lead-ins, total viewers, 9:45p - 10p
KTVT/11 -- 283,667
WFAA/8 -- 195,106
KXAS/5 -- 118,489 (compared to 159,432 in Nov 2008's non-Leno sweeps)
KDFW/4 -- 80,689 (newscasts)

I'm not sure how much of KXAS/5's numbers are weak lead-ins, and how much is weak (and/or not trying hard enough) newscasts...

Would any of these stations [meaning non network owned-operated] have the luxury of switching Jay Leno to say 8 PM and just bump other programs up a notch to take his spot thereby maybe giving their news a shot at being competitive? I realize that the feed from the network would be coming in at 10 but can't the stations just record it and play it a day later? I'm sure if NBC squawks the affilates can basically tell them to shove it and not play Jay Leno at all. I'm sure if enough stations demand it they can counter any threats that NBC makes.

In general, there's the little matter of contracts. You can't just do whatever you want if it violates what you're legally obligated to do by your own choice.

WHDH got 3rd in Boston...

#1: WBZ: 176,700
#2: WCVB: 143,300
#3: WHDH: 103,900
#4: WFXT: 55,700

But they were also 3rd in every timeslot, except 6-7 AM, during which time they got 2nd.

So how did your NBC affiliate do at 11/10 PM in the November
sweeps with Leno as a lead-in?

The numbers are starting to appear--here's DMA #12 Phoenix,
as press-released by the CBS affiliate:

It will be a while before we have the answers for DMAs 57 through 210; these markets are STILL "diary only". (Which is nothing short of pathetic in this day and age.) The nature of the diary makes it longer to process the data, compared to the set/meter markets (where household ratings are measured electronically, but demographic data comes from the diary) and the LPM markets (where both household and demographic data are measured electronically from a single device.)

I think once WFXT starts to come within striking distance of WHDH at 11 PM, that might be the point where Sunbeam says "NBC be damned," and go forward with their original proposal of a 10 PM newscast, either bumping Leno to 11 PM, or pre-empting him outright. Ed Ansin must be getting agita right now.

I cannot wait for the New Orleans numbers to be released!

One thing's for certain: WWL is guaranteed another HUGE win over WVUE, WGNO, and of course WDSU!!

Are the numbers for the 11pm news a factor in Lettermans increase in ratings?
Yes, but another factor is the factor of Conan not being Leno. Hard (nearly impossible, even) to know which is more important.
