Interesting thread, especially the posts about WRFF.
I think the challenge with WRFF is that younger listeners are spending more time consuming music on Spotify and other non-radio mediums. My oldest daughter is 13, loves a lot of alt bands, but would never turn on a radio and immediately goes to her phone. (Yes, that saddens me...)
I bet 104.5 could probably carve out a niche for themselves if they leaned a bit more "classic" alternative and targeted listeners in their 30s and 40s with a core library of tracks from the late 80's, 90's and early 00's mixed with a handful of currents. I know they're already playing Green Day, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Oasis, etc. regularly, but I can't tell you the last time I heard them dig deeper than the biggest hits from any of them.
Looking at the last day, here's what we got from those artists:
Pearl Jam: Even Flow
Nirvana: Come As You Are, All Apologies (album), Lithium, Heart-Shaped Box, Lithium, Come As You Are, Smells Like Teen Spirit, Lithium (yes... 3x in 24 hours)
Oasis: Champagne Supernova, Wonderwall, Wonderwall (yes, 2x at 9:19am and 4:34pm)
Green Day: American Idiot, Good Riddance, Boulevard..., Holiday, Boulevard..., 21 Guns, Basket Case, Good Riddance, Wake Me Up..., Holiday, Brain Stew, American Idiot, Boulevard... (10:45pm and 3:03am, 10:08am)
Killers: Mr Brightside, Mr Brightside, When You Were Young, Somebody Told Me, When You Were Young, Somebody Told Me,
Weezer: Buddy Holly, Africa, Say It Aint So, Island In The Sun, Buddy Holly, Say It Aint So, Buddy Holly
So, I completely understand the need to recycle songs in overnights, but the singe on some of these tracks. "Lithium" 3x in a day? "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" 3x in a day? Yes, only one track from Pearl Jam, a band who the format should easily have 6-8 core songs in rotation from and another 5-6 low rotations/deeper cuts.
Plus, if they worked in some of the 80s/90s alt bands like The Cure, REM, Beck, Social Distortion, Stone Temple Pilots, Beastie Boys, Garbage, Matthew Sweet, Rancid, etc. plus some more one-hit wonders like "Sell Out" by Reel Big Fish, "6 Underground" from Sneaker Pimps, etc.
And, for a core band like Nirvana, imagine hearing "Lounge Act" or the album version of "About A Girl" now and then. For Pearl Jam, how about the occasional "Why Go," "Once" or "Not For You?"
I just feel there is zero excitement or surprise when I listen to Alt 104.5 and it's just a lazy shuffle of the same songs, day in and day out.
