Now 92.3 and High School Rumors

nd2023

Banned
Remember when you were in high school, rumors spread like wildfire. Now the new rumor that will be spreading around high schools tomorrow will be "There's a new pop station on 92.3, listen, it's like the coolest thing ever, there are no commercials". People will also say "92.3 K-Rock sucks, it's now playing crappy pop music, don't listen to it anymore", and some people will end up listening to 92.3 and liking it.

I remember how fast people at my school heard about Wired 96.5 when it launched. The Pulse 87 Facebook group was started by one high school girl and now it has 6,000 people and the official support of the station.

I remeber in my high school when Power 105.1 launched in '02, there was literaly fights going down with Hot 97 fans versus Power 105.1 fans.

Yup I was HS too when Power 105.1 launched....I was the first one to break the news in class since I was the only one who followed radio at the time....My friends and classmates loved when heard there was another Hip-Hop station...I could have cared less since I was a rock fan (and there were not many high school rock fans at the time in my school).

Surprisingly there were a decent aount of dance fans in my high school, obvously including myself, of course this was when KTU had dance. For the rock fans, it was both K-Rock and G-Rock they liked but the metal fans was WSOU all the way.

Yep, lol, I was also in high school during the Power 105 launch... I made the "power switch"...... and then switched back to Hot 97 once Power 105 dropped the "Old Skool" throwback hits several times each hour, and dropped Ed Lover and Dr. Dre. Hot 97 is still my station, but there are better Urban stations outside of NYC. Both Hot 97 and Power 105 got too corporate.

It wasn't as big in my high school as "Rumba 107.1" Now THAT was big news, we had Rumba 107.1 Stickers all over the hallways, bathrooms, The cafeteria workers even had it on in the cafeteria loudspeakers. Keep in mind though that my school was well over 90%, (probably about 97%) Hispanic, and uptown with a perfect Rumba signal.

Im guessing Now 92.3 would be a bigger deal in the suberbs, where Krock was probably a bigger hit, and where Z100 also tends to dominate. Still, no doubt the rumors will be spreading in the city. Probably a bit later on tho.

I also remember Rumba launching. I also remember seeing Rumba stickers in the streets of Asbury park and a few at the train stations in Asbury, Belmar, and Long Branch.

I broke the news of the Wired 96.5 launch, but the same 10 songs over and over was a turn-off. It did catch on within a month when the playlist widened. I knew it caught on when I heard that station playing in the weight room without me touching the radio. The 102.7 CHR stunting before Blink also caught on quickly, but my peers didn't really like Blink 102.7.

Okay, I am definitely going to "date" myself here! :D

I remember high school, talking to my friends about this new radio station that launched in New York City with some crazy morning show! That station?

Z-100

Yup, kinda "old" there..... ;)

It wasn't as big in my high school as "Rumba 107.1" Now THAT was big news, we had Rumba 107.1

When Rumba 107 signed on back in May 2002 only one person cared about the flip....They were the only person in the school that I knew who like Country music and was mad to see Y-107 flip.

I went to a small school and again most listened to Hip-Hop because it was "the thing" at the time....The louder the bass the better.....We had dance fans (I even liked it for a short time) but there was no station for dance except for 92.7 WLIR who mixed in dance at night and had the "Island Underground" Sunday Nights......Yes there was WKTU but only a few listened since they played lots of the same songs that could be heard on WWPR & WHTZ.....Now some rock fans listened to K-Rock but most of them listened to Q-104 instead......There was also the headbanger crowd who listened to 89.5 WSOU and boy were they pissed when Seton Hall cut the heavy metal back in January 2002 and went with a softer sound (they have since gone back to their heavy metal).....I think I was the only one who listened to 92.7 WLIR & 105.5 WDHA for rock because their signals came in pretty weak around here.

I'm going to date myself here too with this memory of a flip from AOR to CHR.

It was WPLJ in 1983 going from playing Led Zeppelin, to playing Flashdance, overnight.

Back in 1983, CHR included a lot of Soft AC, like Lionel Richie, Air Supply, James Ingram/Patti Austin. I remember it was summer and school wasnt in session that morning that PLJ flipped, but I can remember being so upset, calling all my friends, and saying "PLJ is playing Air Supply!"

That flip was not very popular with me and my peers. I was fine with hearing the new Top 40 at the time, like Duran Duran, and Men At Work......but the Soft AC part of it was a bit too much.

On the other hand, 26 years later,(last night) my teenage daughter was thrilled to hear that a rock station flipped to CHR.

Luckily this CHR that flipped last night, has no Air Supply, Barry Manilow, Sergio Mendes and Lionel Richie, like the one that flipped when I was a teenager.

I was in HS when KTU debuted...
Most of my classmates were was disgustingly anti-dance..the students wrote articles about KTU sucking in the school paper bla bla bla. This was in the middle of the entire grunge scene of the 90s-definitely an odd time to be in high school.

Aaaah the "Disco Sucks" caampaign still flows in their blood. I wonder what they have to say now that most rock stations are flipping to CHR?

I remember that 'PLJ flip too! It was strange to say the least that a station that played Zeppelin, AC/DC, Kiss, The Who, etc. all of a sudden played Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, Men At Work, etc.

Actually, the flip to NOW marks the THIRD time in NYC that a station went from rock to CHR. Remember WAPP?? I think it was 1985 or so that the station also went from rock to CHR, and eventually in '86 from CHR to Top 40/Urban (another name for "dance").

And yeah, I did tune in that day in 1982 when Musicradio 77 became talk.
