NOW CHARLES WANTS THE MARKET TO UNIONIZE

I don't think there's anything wrong with citing some of Geoff Charles' blogs on the HJY website since he puts them up there for the world to see. He started on the GM thing but also calls for radio people in this market and others to unionize so they can compete for wages and benefits. He referred to a banking mindset of media kingpins, calls them wheeler dealers, and sez without the people behind the mike the media empires wouldn't survive. I don't fully agree or disagree with him probably because he isn't one of the lower priced people in the market and it sounds like he wants more. I think I'd sympathize more if the blog came from someone making $30K a year. I'm just surprised he's blogging stuff like this on the station website. Can't help but wonder what's going on there with him and HJY.

I think he feels bad about all the firings months ago.

Some radio people are treated well, but alot aren't.
He always speaks his mind, I think thats all this is..

I don't totally agree. What Charles said may be the case for talk Radio. But I personally think that every music station in the country would be just fine. As a matter of fact when I want to hear music I would prefer not to hear DJ's.

Thats what you have XM and Siruis for.....people DO want to hear personalities, but good ones!

Thats where radio is failing....look at Pro-FM....nothing against who ever is doing nights now, but there is NO substance to his breaks whatsoever, its bland, boring, and is doesn't register with anyone....this person kind of sounds like one of those wanna-be radio guys DJing a high school prom. Thats not his fault, but the fault of the people running the ship. People still connect with radio dj's but they have to be saying things that stay with people, and unfortunatly most radio dj's aren't really saying anything

Radio is full of phonies and full of people who laugh way to hard at their own jokes. It's a challenge to even find a DJ who is worth listening to anymore. So I think many people have reached the point of just wanting the DJ's to shut the hell up. As you pointed out RadioNut, just way to many of them Suck!

I wouldn't use the word suck but we're at a point where the majority could leave and never hit the "whatever happened to" topics on these boards later. As far as unionizing it would provide bargaining power and help to define exactly what duties people in the business have and where to draw the line. I don't know enough about life in a union shop but think of firefighter strikes, policy strikes, strikes in the medical field, and radio strikes. Guess what would be number four on people's lists in order of importance? Most people care more about a supermarket chain strike than live voices disappearing from their radio. I don't agree with your attitude that the DJs aren't needed but I will grant you that you're sadly in the majority. If listeners gripe at all it would be because of changes in their morning shows. After that they wouldn't blink an eye at jockless shows.

I was just looking at information regarding HD radio. While reading reviews I found an interesting comment that I would like to place right here in this thread where it belongs.

Demographic info - I'm a 50 year old early adopter - when there's a clear reason to upgrade/update or whatever. But I've got to convince myself of the benefit. Going to broadband over dialup was a no-brainer, going from regular phone to VOIP likewise. I spend between two and three hours a day in the car. The local area (Atlanta) has a fair number of radio stations.. and most of them suck like a brand new Oreck. If it isn't a shallow playlist, it's a motormouthed DJ who just won't shut up and play the music.
