Now For A Shocker (Concerning K-Mart)

Went to their Prattville store last night.  Discovered that they no longer sell music CD's.  You heard me right.  Did ask a few of their workers why they no longer did it.  They didn't give me much of a response but I was able to put two and two together on my own.  I say the reason why is because people are now downloading their favorite tunes from the Internet and it was taking a big bite out of the sales, hence the reason why their parent company Sears decided to ditch the music altogether.

Hope the other stores, that still sell them, won't quit doing it.  Still have future plans of getting my music on CD, for years to come.

Well just checked their web site and yes they still have CD's for sale on it.

Hope that won't stop anytime soon.

Oh no! Now where will Tammy get her Now That's What I Call Music cds to play in her Firebird!?

...and now I have to clean up the soda I just spit all over my laptop screen...

Stupid move on K-mart's part; more people still buy music on cd than by download.

Well, this is K-Mart, remember? The retail profit margin on CDs is slim, and stocking so many artists/genres to a point of having an inventory even close to interesting is expensive.

Too, a friend who manages a Target tells me his store is in talks to stop carrying CDs due to the slim margin and even more importantly the through-the-roof theft rate- he says CDs are the most stolen item in the store. They can't have an employee monitor the department every minute the store's open, but that's the only way to have any impact on the shrinkage according to him.

My understanding is the "Bigs" (big labels) want to phase out CDs in the future anyways due to costs...

I hope it doesn't happen anytime soon. Unlike CDs, you don't actually own the music you buy from Amazon or iTunes or whoever. You're just given a license to use it. Which can be revoked at any time, for any reason.

AAC+ and top quality MP3s are pretty good delivery mechanisms, but I still want an open source, lossless default option. I want everything in FLAC. Preferrably at 48 kHz/24-bit. It's overkill for 99.999%, but just because I'm the 0.001% it doesn't mean I should get shafted for being a part of the 21st Century.
