NOW FOX-4 CHOPPER CRASHES NEAR DALLAS

Check the Dallas Radio board for details. Briefly, no one killed, Chip Waggoner (KDFW) and Julie DeHarty (KVIL, KRLD) and pilot were the only ones on board. Julie got a cut across her head. Chopper appears totaled; it ended up on its side. Wreck was in Grand Prairie, just north of Joe Pool Lake.

Sadly, this appears to be a bad weekend for aviation. First, there was the emergency landing of a vintage WWII plane on its way to the Oshkosh air show. Then, the collision and crash of the two Phoenix news helicopters. Then, at Oshkosh, a mid-air collision between two WWII fighters in which one pilot died. Now, not only the Fox 4 chopper "hard landing" but also the emergency landing of what looked like a twin-engine private airplane at Point Mugu, CA. I don't recall a time (other than 9/11) when there were so many aviation-related accidents in one short time frame.

Undeterred, KDFW was back in the air for a police chase in the afternoon. The driver told police his cat was dying, and he was trying to reach the vet. Imagine if a crash had occurred because of that!

Footage was great. Channel 11 actually did a good job. Channel 8 broke off early soon after the arrest.

5 broke off at the same time, about 4:25.

I'm sure a lot of us couldn't help but think about the Phoenix crashes the whole time while watching this afternoon's chase here. Sometimes the concept of "pool reporting" makes a lot of sense.
