I'll bite, but what market?? :) If we are talking Altoona it would be everyone I worked with. In 22 years in radio I have never worked with a more dedicated group of people who truly cared and were passionate about what they were doing. Sitting in Denny's at 3am or that bowling alley on a Thursday talking biz and just hanging out is something I have not experienced in a staff since. And looking back we had more going against us and more forces trying to divide us, but we kept on.

Lets go Altoona and State College seperate

Here's mine

AM Drive: Sean McKay before he started hitting the coke (WFBG-AM)
(Honorable Mention) Steve Willett on WALY and Dave Shannon on Q-94
Midday: Stephanie Walsh (WPRR)
PM Drive: Kelsey back in the day on WFBG-AM
Nights: Tommy Edwards on WPRR

State College

AM Drive: Joe and Pam on B-103
Midday: Shotgun Mark Curtis (When GMR was country)
PM Drive: Matthew Haywood (Revolution)
Nights: Hitman when he first started there

How's that Scott.

Or at Hatch's place, drinking beer and watching Letterman.

Stephanie Walsh was about as good as anybody that ever came through Altoona, and better than most that didn't, in my opinion. Obviously major market material, illustrated by her recent run in San Francisco.

I really liked Darrell Ray's style.

Scott St. John was a major market jock.

I still have Dave Brooks aircheck and that guy always blew me away. He'd come in one day a week and just kick butt.

Sean McKay is still talked about locally, and he hasn't worked in this market in years. He is a local legend.

Charlie Weston from WRTA. I know in recent years he wasn't a jock, but he was a wonderful talk host and sports announcer. He is missed in Altoona.

Steve Willett.

Tony Booth. We used to make fun of the way that everybody at WFBG would say the call letters. w EFFFF bg. I think that came from Tony Booth.

Rich Dennis in his early WVAM days.

I have to agree with Scott - most of the people that I worked with were really dedicated, hard-working and passionate. I left out Tommy and Harlow and Steve Hilton and a bunch of other people and they are all as good as or better than anybody working in Altoona or State College today.

YOU'RE Shotgun Mark Curtis, moron! You can't nominate yourself! It's against the rules I just made up.

I never listened to State College during the midday.

I was almost the midday guy on the All New, All Hit B103 back in the early '90's, when it was owned by Burbach. They interviewed me and offered me the job, but I declined. Jim Richards was PD at the time, and their GM was a real trip. Interviewed me while wearing cut-off jeans and swilling Coca Cola from a big bottle. The office was somehow connected to Domino's Pizza, so you could go out a door and around the corner and be in the Pizza shop. Crazy.

Oh my lord...you had a close encounter with John Frederickson! John was a TRIP...very excentric and he lived on coca cola and he sniffed rubbing alcohol LITERALLY...but you'd never find a more dedicated GM. Heck he was there at 8am and again at 3AM. His life was that station and his dog...we all felt so bad for him when his dog went to that great studio in the sky :(

Many a good memories about weird expereiences with John...most of the staff hated him, but for some reason in John's eyes I could do no wrong! I think he would have left me play 10 straight days of Showtunes or Classical or whatever if I told him it was part of my act. That was the great thing about John..he said early on...Steve do your thing...if it stops working, I will tell you.

By the way Harlow...thanks for the Props! I enjoyed my stint on Nights at the B. I liked mornings too, BUT THEY DIDN'T LIKE ME! Hitman and 5:00am do not mix well. That's why they pulled me off of it after about 6 months.

As for favorite Jocks...well don't want to offend anyone so I will keep my opinions to myself on that subject...but I have seen some very talented names brought up in this thread and I miss you all!

Addendum to rule:
People who nominate themselves are obviously self-promting egoists and, as such, they should be censored from participating in future "who was the best..." or "Who had the biggest..." type lists.
Those in vilolation of said rule must lose one (1) USA Today per incident.

Now.
New list.
Which DJ had the worst personal grooming habits?
Hmmmm...

Here's mine
AM Drive: Bill Dann's Christmas special
Midday: "Walko This Way" Ebensberg break (John Walko)
PM Drive: Scott Holsopple, lets have a rock and roll party in the streets show. (one day only)
Nights: Radio Pete, getting smooth for the ladies show.

How can you put Bill Dann's Christmas special ahead of the radio musings of either Adam Lee and Kate McKowski or Radio Rich?

I forgot my top overnighter was Big Gene in the Morning Time who got canned for doing a fat chick on Betty's desk.

Dead air was the most popular song on the Big Gene show.

Well... In Big Gene's defense... Maybe Moses's office was locked.

Dead air was not Big Gene's fault--it was the fault of the security guard at the PPG plant who forgot to call and wake Gene up, so he could flip LP over.

He forgot to tell him to flip the fat chick over, too.

Fredrickson was hands-down the strangest man I have ever met in my life. No one else is even close. He seemed to like me, too...but if you were on his bad side he could make your life a living hell.

His little poodle always used to run next door to Domino's Pizza and take a giant crap on their kitchen floor. I'm sure that was real good for business. People coming to pick up their pizzas, and they see this huge steaming pile of dog turds laying on the floor.

You could fill an entire message board with Fredrickson stories. Very, very weird dude. Kind of sad in a way.

Oh now man...did you have to go there! We dj's ate a lot of Domino's screw ups as you remember and hearing that story just does not make me want to take a big heaping bite out of one of their pizzas!

dave, i'll also interviewed with him, when i worked weekends there.
it was a winger t-shirt, and the BOSS of coke. i liked the guy.
he was dedicated. he did a play by play football game at mansion
park....after the first game, he fell down the steps and broke
both of his legs...he went to the hospital, and came back and did
a second game...he called me and asked me if i would wait for him
to come back and help him with the equipment. so i drank a 40
and waited for him!!!!

> > Nights: Tommy Edwards on WPRR
> > Nights: Hitman when he first started there (B103)

You know...I point out something really weird...Tommy and I have NEVER worked together, yet we always worked opposite each other.

When I was in Altoona on PRR, working Full-Time, Tommy was on-air at B-103 in State College, Part-Time. When I was released from PRR and came to State College to take on Part-Time duties...Tommy had shifted to PRR in Altoona as a full-timer. As time went on, Tommy did PRR nights, I did B103 Nights. Tommy did PRR Mornings, I did B103 Mornings. When he was on afternoons, so was I! It was like we were equal opposites always...Ironically, each of us also had runs at the programming end at some point. He programmed PRR and I had Programming Responsibilities shared with Dave Dallow at B103 at the same time.

I know its mere coincidence...but I always thought that it was odd that our career paths seemed to be so closely resembling of each at all times. And that's your Twilight Zone Moment for Today!

After 5 hours of listening to the Ray Horner/Mac Daniels old fart country on WVAM, I had some time to think of some wild stuff.

Remember calling the hotel in Hawaii and saying that you were the Michael Jackson tour manager and all the crap you needed for the hotel room.

That was some funny stuff.

Not as funny as Skipper M. Khronke, the accident waiting to happen in the Cove area.
