NOW let's gossip about WRNB's format flip

I mean, really. How long can they keep this up? Personally, I think the station is great. Versus WDAS-FM, I prefer WRNB many times over. But look at the ratings. In August, WRNB had fewer listeners (cume) than WJJZ! (They are reaching for roughly the same demographic, right? I'd love to know how WRBN does with their target.)

Looking at August's cume ratings, it also struck me that our CHR's get over 1 million listeners each. Two CHR's in the top five. That's pretty impressive!

Simply put, as long as Radio One owns 107.9 (and 100.3 and 103.9), or until the company suddenly decides to sell and program to a wider (whiter?) audience, do not expect any changes to WPPZ/WPHI/WRNB anytime in the near future.

I know the race angle comes into the discussion a lot and it's deserved since Radio One management began publicly stating they want to do urban formats. But do you think they aren't looking at possibilities to make the cluster more lucrative? Can the "color of radio" be more important to them than the money aspect of it? If so, I don't know whether to ridicule their business ignorance or commend them for staying true to their goal.

fennessy! you make me feel terrible for laughing at that!

i'd like to get to nick's point: is the assertion that radio one was making more money in the market before they flipped Y100 based in any sort of reality? does anyone have any numbers to back that up? and remember, bringing in less cash can still be a positive if they're costs of operation have gone down significantly...which i think they have.

Indeed, and that was at a low point. Had y100 stayed, it could be enjoying the ratings RFF has enjoyed since signing on, but yeah they didn't even wanna just move it to a weaker signal.

As for lack of programing to a wider audience, this is the main reason the company has been losing money, and been forced to sell some of their stations in smaller markets. So it is probably a safe bet things will change soon, either by radio one changing its ways, or going bye bye.

I have no numbers, but Jim McGuinn (PD of y100) did state that it was making radio one the most at the time of its death. So unless he was lying, I would think he would know.

Soon Yi, this is why your reaction should be to ridicule their ignorance. It's sad, but it is true. Until Cathy Hughes and her cronies either open their minds, or just flat out sell (which I see as the more likely scenario), these stations will stay the same and slip further into obscurity. Hell, even Praise came on like gangbusters. And now THEY'RE even stinking up the joint. The late Ragan Henry proved you can be an African American owner yet program to a wide audience.

One of Philly's radio blunders.....

Radio One had Preston & Steve and the Y100 format; WMMR had low ratings and a bad morning show; It was known knowledege that YSP was losing Stern and going in the 'all talk' direction; there was no other station w/a rock/alternative format in Philly. Radio One would be at the top right now if they kept Preston & Steve & the Y100 format instead of at the bottom with the Beat (which was even at the bottom on 103.9)

If Radio One kept Preston & Steve & Y100 what do think WMMR & WYSP would be like today, and 104.5???

MMR would be the same, just without (perhaps) a high-profile morning show. YSP would have changed regardless, since Free FM didn't set the world on fire. 104.5, however, probably would have given Rumba more of a chance on FM.

I agree with Rob. 104.5 would be the only one different now. However even if rumba had stayed longer I think by now it would've flipped. To what, who knows? Maybe that FM talk everyone keeps talking about in regards to clearchannel.

Certainly another possibility, and thanks for reminding me of that. They could have pulled the "market exclusivity" card to bring Rush, Noory and Glenn Beck over from WPHT, forcing 1210 to either pick up also-ran shows or to find more local talent. It might have painted 990 into such a corner where they would have to flip/sell off.

However, Radio 104.5 seems to be a success. I think CC stands pat for now. I believe they are tapped out at market max, no?

Where's Rapking? ;D
Boston would love to have this dilemma according to him.

The only reason R***** ONE blew up Y-100 was (well we all know why), Y was doing great, numbers wise and their new signal made them a real player in the market but we all know what R1 is about.....Pigs with lipstick.....

Market is tough for an Urban AC. Anyone have the numbers on Joyner?

With or Without Radio One, Philly Radio dial will always be better than Boston Crappy Radio dial . I wish Radio One would leave Boston and stop trashing the call letters of W-I-L-D .

Indeed they are, at five FM's (as well as that one rinky dink AM on 1480).
