NOW? REALLY?

Alright. So Las Vegas makes NOW station #2. I'm really trying to decide how I feel about it. To be honest, both NOW's are cookie cutter. What's special? With a station like NOW, and a station that makes fun of the others for playing old music... you have NOTHING to brag about when half of the playlist is recurrent/gold.

New York: Tons of repetition. Nothing exciting. There's no "DAMN - thats a shocker."
Vegas: STILL leaving Vegas without a Mainstream CHR. For such a big city, you have no top 40. Only rhythmic CHR's across the board. Instead of being like a typical NOW, why not program to the market?

That's the biggest problem. NOW is automatically becoming a Rhythmic CHR for each market it launches in. (And speaking of launches, they're not that good! Imaging is hittin' but nothing to switch and listen to for hours. It gets boring.) Back to the Rhythmic CHR problem. For NYC, fine. Z100 and WPLJ are around to fill the void. But for Vegas, what kinda sense does it make to have 3 Rhythmics now.... and thats me thinking of KVEG, KLUC, and NOW. There could be more out of city ones or LPFM's LOL.

And then next...... if you're going to call the station NOW... where is the NOW? Sure, the current hits are on there but there's hardly any NEW music. At least Radio Now spins new music first. Don't you think NOW could hurt their competitor(s) if they focus on NOW. Spin the hits. Hit em with a few throwbacks an hour. AND BE FIRST ON NEW MUSIC. Don't play stiffs like Sirius Hits 1, but be on the gaining ones first. Those you should hear more.

Those are just some of my thoughts. I don't hate the NOW format, but it's a little bogus for how much publicity is into it. Your thoughts?

I'm just glad we already have a rhythmic station in Phoenix (and others suddenly also trying to also be rhythmic to some degree) because I love the rhythmic sound (well, again, now in 2009 with the way music is evolving), but only the REAL rhythmic sound appeals to me. If there's no rhythmic, then I'll settle for top 40, but neither are any good if they choose to ignore the dance music portion of their formats.

Don't get me wrong. I am a huge rhythmic fan. But when you have TONS in one market, are the top 40 listeners supposed to settle for it? Just looking out for others here.

Vegas' "NOW" is not CBS Radio, or anything to do with Now #1. Just a copy of the name.

Lansing, MI has a "Now FM" as well (97.5 WJIM-FM) although it was around well before NYC's. The playlist seems kind of stiff-heavy to me and also leans toward the pop/rock side of the CHR spectrum, but I much prefer it to Detroit's Rhythmic-in-Mainstream-clothing Channel 955. They are owned by Citadel.
