Now that Beasley has debuted a dance format on WPOW II

Who else will debut a dance channel on their 2nd HD subchannel?

Some possibilities

New York: WKTU, WNEW, WHTZ, WQHT

Los Angeles: KBIG, KIIS, KPWR, KHHT, with a wildcard being KKBT(though I see a Urban AC feed for that one.)

Chicago: WBBM-FM, WKSC, Q101 II,

San Francisco: Yes I know, you all have Energy, but you don't think that KYLD, KMEL, or KITS would be a good spot for a 2nd dance sub channel?

Detroit: Mabye ABC brings back the dance version of WDRQ on 93.1 II! Well, you all can dream.

Philly: WIQQ, Wired 96.5

Washington DC: WPGC. Only one I see as a possibilty.

Dallas: Kiss 106.1 II, Casa 106.7 II

Houston: KBRE, KBXX(KBXX is the only Radio One Station that I actually could see a dance sub channel on!)

Orlando: WPYO(THE PARTY IS BACK ON 95.3 II)!, WXXL.

Tampa Bay: WFLZ, WLLD, WDUV(ok, I was kidding about that last one, come on, we all gotta laugh!)

Atlanta: WBTS, Q100

Phoenix: Yes, I know, you have Energy here also, but I wouldn't be suprised at a KKFR or KZZP foray into dance on the sub channel.

Denver: Mabye KQKS explores their dance side they never really explored on the main channel. Mabye CC takes a chance at KFMD?

Well, thoughts? I listed all of these markets because they have had dance or dance friendly stations in the past/present. Mabye you can think of more markets, but these were the most obvious ones by my book.
______________

Clear Channel I see launching a KTU2

> Los Angeles: KBIG, KIIS, KPWR, KHHT, with a wildcard being

I wouldn't be surprised if Emmis and Clear Channel face each other with HD versions of KPWR and KIIS.

> Chicago: WBBM-FM, WKSC, Q101 II,

B96 has the heritage. I see them going that route.

> San Francisco: Yes I know, you all have Energy, but you

Knowing KYLD's history with Dance, they would go for it. But I wouldn't count out KNGY if they enter the HD sweepstakes in the future.

> Detroit: Mabye ABC brings back the dance version of WDRQ on
> 93.1 II! Well, you all can dream.

That if Disney still keep their stations. But I also see Clear Channel as a possibility.

> Philly: WIQQ, Wired 96.5

That's a tough one. But WIOQ will probably beat them to the punch.

> Washington DC: WPGC. Only one I see as a possibilty.

I agree with you. And they do have some history with Dance.

> Dallas: Kiss 106.1 II, Casa 106.7 II

The winner: Kiss 106.1 II

> Houston: KBRE, KBXX(KBXX is the only Radio One Station that
> I actually could see a dance sub channel on!)

I have doubts about Radio One bring a Dance format to HD, but anything is possible.

> Orlando: WPYO(THE PARTY IS BACK ON 95.3 II)!, WXXL.

Could happen, if both stations don't beat each other to the punch.

> Tampa Bay: WFLZ, WLLD, WDUV(ok, I was kidding about that
> last one, come on, we all gotta laugh!)

Knowing that area's history with Top40 radio wars, expect that one to be a big event.

> Atlanta: WBTS, Q100

The upper hand would go to WBTS.

> Phoenix: Yes, I know, you have Energy here also, but I
> wouldn't be suprised at a KKFR or KZZP foray into dance on

Actually I wouldn't be surprised if both KKFR and KZZP jump into the foray, since those two stations have a history with Dance.

> Denver: Mabye KQKS explores their dance side they never
> really explored on the main channel. Mabye CC takes a chance

Well that advantage would go in favor in KQKS(After all they did play Dance back in the KS104 days).

> Well, thoughts? I listed all of these markets because they

Well here's other possibilities....

Boston: Entercom could bring back Star 93.7 as a HD.

Milwaukee: WXSS-HD? Could happen.

Pittsburgh: I see Clear Channel spinning a Dance version of WKST.

Sacramento: If Infinity plans a KSFM-HD for Dance that will be a surprise.

Las Vegas: See Sacramento(If they plan one for KLUC).

San Diego: Channel 93.3-HD? Well they did debut with a Dance direction.

Seattle: Either Infinity with KBKS-HD or Clear Channel with KUBE-HD.

Portland, Oregon: KXJM-HD? That one I see happening.

I actually see Channel 955 as the most likely candidate at the present time to offer a second Dance-oriented station.

No way. It's either Z-104, which when it was launched was very Dance friendly, or Washington's Hot 99.5 could make a pass for it too.

>
> > Houston: KBRE, KBXX(KBXX is the only Radio One Station

KRBE easily. With the weekend mixshows they used to have that leaned on Trance, and with their history of being very Dance friendly at times.

> > Tampa Bay: WFLZ, WLLD, WDUV(ok, I was kidding about that
> > last one, come on, we all gotta laugh!)

FLZ would be the most likely one to do since they have the best and most knowledgeable staff when it comes to Dance in the Bay area.

>

I disagree - just listen to Q-100 during the weekends. Their mixshows are among the best in the country. What has The Beat done for Dance lately?

Don't forget about Modern Rocker KTCL, they were one of the most Dance friendly Modern Rockers in the country.

>

Agreed, though Kiss 108 had a long history of being very Dance friendly at one time.

Agreed.

Launcing a Dance station on a sub channel in Vegas makes plenty of $en$e so I see more then one station contemplating it.

I don't think so, since C-89.5 is already in the market.

>

Or on Z-100, which airs some good weekend mixshows.

Other markets/stations:

Z-107.7 St. Louis (good weekend mixshows already in place)
Baltimore: Mix 106.5, or 102.7
97.9 Kiss FM Jacksonville
Wild 95.5 West Palm Beach
92.7 Wow FM Key West
Mix 100.7 Terre Haute
96.3 The Rose Cape Cod
K-104 Poughkeepsie
Kiss 98.5 Buffalo
98 PXY Rochester
Fly 92 Albany
Power 102 El Paso
Z-106.7 San Antonio
Wild 97.9 Oklahoma City
Z-95.7 Kansas City
Kiss 95.7 Hartford
CD 101 Columbus
96.5 Kiss FM Cleveland
Tower 98 Toledo
95 Triple X Burlington

I think we might be getting just a little carried away with this, but yeah, some of these stations are no-brainers.

New York: KTU2. Definitely.

LA: KIIS. I doubt Emmis is still interested in the dance audience. Their Urban stations are more likely to do an underground hip-hop or classic hip-hop format.

Chicago: B96. Definitely.

Dallas: KDL did OK, so why not KHKS trying this?

San Francisco: KYLD. Definitely, even with Energy around.

Philly: I can see Wired and Q both doing one. Wired would simply take the feed from sister station Power in Miami, while Q would do a more local and gold-based one that capitalized on its 90's dance sound.

DC: I'm not sure we'd get one. Bonneville has completely abandoned any form of rhythmic music on their stations, so no Z104. If anything, Z104's multicast will simulcast one of Bonneville's AM's. Hot 99.5 could do it, but they never embraced dance, so it would be an odd fit.

Atlanta: Q100, but this might be a problem since as of now, HD signals don't travel as far as analog.

Phoenix: Power. Definitely.

Baltimore: I don't think either Mix 106.5 or 102.7 would want to do this, so probably no one.

I can see KPWR going back to its roots like WPOW did with a secondary channel for Dance. Who would've thought WPOW would offer dance on its second channel so you can't count out KPWR doing it. WPOW doing it may even bring them closer to it because of the herritage with dance. KIIS is too wrapped up with being number one and protecting itself I doubt they would even dip into dance. They've also shun off dance and now its zero dance. So I doubt they are going to give it its own channel when they don't even provide a dance mixshow these days!

Now who is listening to these secondary channels? The programming is probably so canned like a jukebox, that I doubt their even worth it, considering the other options out there like Satellite radio. They aren't going to pay jocks when nobody is listening and its going to be a LOOOOONG time if ever. Which equals cheap boring radio that your better off listening to better options.

Its all about the content!

> B96 has the heritage. I see them going that route.

I hope not. Eric Bradley specifically, does not believe in the format, and was a major driving force behind taking the station Hispanic targetted Urban.

But then, how many others in the city have any inkling how to do it. Or will even attempt to do it right?

Unfortunately, you will see that HD2 radio will be mostly jukeboxes, automated and there to push more ads. Especially while there are no or too few recievers to actually reach peoples ears.

Just seen the Kenwood HD2 unit for the car today. 400 bucks. Sirius, 100 bucks portable, and 155 for 15 months total of 255.00 for the 1st year and I can hear it in my house, and more selection and for now commercial free. Hmmm....... not a tough choice. Those prices drop, and the younger gen catches on, should provide it a boost.
______________

Not to mention 6 channels of dance plus BBC Radio 1 for mixshows too.

Im with you guys. I dont see myself getting one of these anytime soon. When I can get plenty of music piped in From My cable Modem, and Beamed down from Satelites. Its just corporate radio trying to pretend their cutting edge again.

You're right: 955 announced... I believe this past Tuesday... that they'll be launching a dance format on WKQI-HD2 today (Friday).
______________

It looks we called this one right. One gets the feeling that Clear Channel may be planning more HD Dance outlets in the future.

Actually.. here is my take on it.

When and if this HD does take off in markets.. I think it could give satellite radio a run for their money. First.. can you imagine all of the cool fomats that will be poping up? IMO, its going to be a lot of formats that the original FM stations dont have the balls to do. This could actually get really good.

Next, I would listen to a hometown dance station anyday of the week over a national dance station. I like that hometown feel. If they do this HD Radio right (with per say club promos, jocks, mixshows, etc) then I would buy it over Sirius.

Im still trying to learn about HD, I dont know anything about it at all. I know here in Miami, they played a sweeper on Power 96 stating that if you could hear these 3 beeps then your radio is HD compatable.. and I heard the 3 beeps so Im thinking that my radio is compatable with HD. If thats the case.. then bye bye SAT Radio. Im getting free dance music on the radio in my car.
______________

Not sure what that sweeper was trying to say but unless you bought your radio very recently it's unlikely that it's really compatible with HD radio. Also look on the front, it would be very well marked with the HD Radio logo.

As an added bonus, many HD-2 stations will not have commericials, so when it comes to terrestrial-fm dance you may be able to have your cake and eat it too.

Power in Phoenix (KKFR 92.3) is owned by Emmis as well. So, I could see them trying the underground hip-hop or classic hip-hop format before Dance, not only in LA, but also Phoenix.

Also, while 92.3 has the history of being the most dance-friendly of any (full-signal) station in the market (I think it was even a disco station with the calls "KXTC" at one time), I'd guess that most people don't remember it that way. Most people probably think that Power has always been 100% hip-hop and R&B. Even when its playlist included dance music, most people remember the station for the hip-hop it played (outside of the period between approximately 1994 and 1996, when it played very little hip-hop - the few hip-hop songs in rotation were relatively "safe".)

Power 92 just doesn't have "dance heritage" like, say, Power 96 or B-96.

I live in Detroit and know NOTHING about this. Can you please elaborate? Maybe a source?

LOL!

Wes, where did you hear HD-2 will have stations *not* running ads? The pricetag to convert over to HD-2 is not cheap! Most if not all will run ads for upkeep and to push up their bottom line and impress stockholders.

Nothing in life is free, especially commercial free radio (minus public/college radio).
______________

I believe there is an industry-wide inititive to program HD2 channels as commercial free, at least initially, to compete with sattellite radio.

Straight from the station itself... Tic Tak announced it on the night show. After the announcement, he played a handful of dance tracks as an example of what to expect.

Post 850 dedicated to both KOA, Denver and WKNR, Cleveland; both of which can be received from my location depending on atmospherics.
______________
