Now that progressive talk returns to Columbus...a message to Phil Boyce

I would personally like to thank you for giving me the incentive to put my money where my mouth is.

In the coming days, I will be meeting with the people involved with the new WVKO about selling ad time on the station.

Don't worry...I'm not quitting my day job.

And I will leave you with one last comment:

Merry Christmas

Schedule looks great, except for Randi Rhodes and Rachel Maddow, who have problems generating ratings and advertisers in some but not all markets. Furthermore, Air America is too risky, they're bankrupt with a black list of advertisers, and the PD just left under unclear reasons, and they lost 1360/San Diego. And, the advertiser black list could expand, just like it did for Michael Savage (see adjacent posts).

Might be safer to go with progressive talkers who are less extreme, like Peter B. Collins, Thom Hartmann, Jay Diamond, or Alan Colmes. Controversial far-left programming that doesn't appeal to righties - especially when it's generated from Air America.

Sean, congratulations to you, but good luck making more than what you'd fill up a coffee can with. I can see Phil shaking in his boots now. Ooh-ee! A low-power crappy AM all the way next to the glove compartment. Maybe they can throw in a bad hum again, too.

It's a good signal daytime, regional, Class B, 3200 W, should do fine. At night, down to 290W, but can't predict nightime unless U know more about local geology, skywave interference on 1580, population density/distribution, "liberal zip codes," and adjacent channels from nearby markets bleeding over 1580 on today's cheap wide bandwidth AM radios.......etc......

1. All but Bill Press were heard on AM 1230--live.

2. Did I not say I wasn't quitting my day job? ;D

3. The current Spanish format comes in loud and clear at night.

Feliz Navidad ;)

Amazing how the competitive format is stuck for the most part in most markets (e.g. 1360s a.m., 1240 a.m. and similar lower wattage allocations) with lousy AM signals compared to the bigger and more powerful frequencies all gobbled up by the likes of Hannity kissers.

I hope 1580 can make a dent. It's better than the rumor a year ago that Salem wanted to buy the station for its clap trap. As to Mr. Tom, I grew up in Ohio and spent plenty of time there, including in Columbus, to know about 1580 and what a dog it is. Not to mention how poorly it was run.

The best sellers of this format are people like you who passionately believe in the station and the hosts, and the format. So good luck. I have always said radio is better off if the Progressive stations survive.

If they get tired of Press in the morning let me know. I have a new morning show I am rolling out Monday, and it might be available there.

Re: It's Jay Diamond, isn't it?

Hey Phil,

I hope that's with your old friend Jay Diamond. We've got to get Jay back on the air. Jay's a great host, and every time he subs for Alan Colmes, listeners call in and thank Jay for doing a fantastic job. Jay could give Bill Press, Jones, and Air America a run for their money.

As long as liberal political activists (especially those with deep pockets) with no background in radio keep trying to keep liberal talk radio afloat with petitions and pledge drives, keep hiring their friends and repeating the same dumb mistakes, the format will have no credibility with listeners or advertisers.

Definition of "insanity:" Repeating the same actions while expecting a different outcome.

Mr. Boyce:

You've got a bunch of stations to play with now. Can you make liberal talk work on one of them (just to show how good you are and that it can be done)?

Oh, yes. I believe his name is Don Imus?

Happy Kwanzaa.
