Now that the DJ Expo 2008 is done, what are your thoughts?

Another year and the expo gets bigger and better.

A couple of highlights for me:

1) Promo Only Party. Amazing. And we expect nothing less from this group.
2) Cyndi Lauper. Needs to start a school to teach artists how to command a stage. She owned it.
3) Wine Tasting with a Porn Star. Enuff said.
4) Joey Fatone name dropping Erik Bradley from B96 as the guy that broke N'Sync while riding in an elevator with us.
5) Radio panel. The top people in the industry dropping knowledge on the people willing to learn. And those top people weren't just on the stage.
6) Finding out that Tony Santiago does in fact exist. :) Nice meeting you.
7) Trying to find some place to eat at 4:30am in either the Showboat or Taj. But not finding one quickly made it a low light.
8. Cato K's story that contained a MLB Player, a cruise ship and Sprite Zero. That's all I'm sayin'
9) The discussion of a new chart coming to light that will help expose dance music even further.
10) Meeting all the people (new and old) that I don't get a chance to see or speak with enough. It's always a pleasure.

The big lowlight for me was seeing that like every other business ego-mania is still alive and well in our industry. The fact remains that no person is any more important than the next in dance music and I hope that gets through to this person one day. Your comment about not playing songs unless you get them first was ugly, egotisical, uncalled for and not un-noticed by those around you or those that have since heard about it. You did yourself a tremendous dis-service.

I too was impressed with this years DJ Expo. As John stated it has gotten bigger and better. Great to see friends, that I have not seen since the last DJ Expo. Since I did not make the trip to WMC this past year.
As for the DJ that made the comment about getting records first. They do have biggest EGO in the world, the only records that they are breaking are the one's the letter carrier has broken before they get to their door. It is hard to believe that this person has been in a Top 10 market for at least 13 years.

Just say the name...

I have a clue as to it might be and I was not even there.

ROTFLMAO! :D

It was my first expo, although I only hung out during the radio panel. I think I might have been the only one there actually taking notes! lol. It was very interesting, to say the least. It was the first time meeting a majority of people in the industry that I've chatted with on the boards all these years. Though the funniest part was outside the room after the seminar, when Vic Latino wanted me to join him in a picture as the guy "that bashed him on the radio boards!" (it's all cool though) :) .

John, definitely a pleasure meeting you and a special thanks for introducing me to Cary Vance (he did a great job moderating)! I also want to thank Kris Henderson, Vic Latino, James Anthony, Richard Dalton, Jewelz, DJ Serg, Joel Salkowitz, Don Parker and Tim Marshall (Z88.9) for taking their time to chat, or at least hear me.

Unfortunately, I also did pick up on a lot of that ego-tripping during the seminar. But I HAD to see that. There is so much that needs to be done with this music (to which the comment, I forget who..I think it was Vic, regarding this music being "faceless" is SPOT ON!) Unless the bikini hottie on the cover is actually singing a track, let's put on the artists image! There were definitely plenty of hottie artists present during the seminar whose face should be on CD covers as well as compilations. :)

All in all, definitely a very educational seminar. Worth the $150.

It was great getting together with friends we don't get a chance to see that often. We live 150 miles away from C89-5 and have to travel 2500 miles just to visit with Jon & co.

I too saw Tony Santiago. He was blasting C89-5 on his iPhone.

Kris Henderson from Super 91-7. And Nicole!! Thanks for drinking for me :) Also huge thanks for the taxi service.

Brett (that's right, Brett finally told me it's 'two 't's) kickin' ass with Z88-9. Nice van, great sounding station. We got to listen to it from Philli to AC and back again.

Will & David from iParty. Always a good chat there!

Harry Legg (the voice of dance radio)!!! Rice anyone???

Dom Armano...WTF - you shrunk!!!

Beau Duran from my old stompin' grounds KNRJ. Good times! Hope it works out!

The promoters, label reps who took care of all of us there. Many thanks. You make us feel welcome.

As for egos. I think you have to have an ego to survive in this industry. Just don't let it get in the way of good judgement.

Vic Latino talked about needing a face on a CD to help him connect to the song. I wonder if they'd have different covers for str8 and gay.

Note to self - skip Starbucks in AC. Not one good drink the entire time.

I definitely agree with the last part of the statement regarding good judgment. There's one thing to develop a strong reputation within any given industry (not just music) whereas if one is accused of having a big "ego" at least you know that he/she busted major tail to build up that rep and respect of his/her peers to "deserve" that. It's when someone does more "I, I, I, I" than a mariachi band with little backing that is just a complete turnoff, IMHO.

BTW, theedger, who were ya? :) I'm trying to remember since there were a couple of you around as I was blasting C89.5 on my Tilt with Richard Dalton there. If terrestrial radio wants to save itself somehow, more stations have to be "mobile compatible" (Pandora or MunduRadio) to get to Gen Y somehow. It was very cool being in A.C. and tuning in (via my phone) to Seattle and San Francisco (Energy 92.7) that way as well as iPartyRadio.

No problem about the "two T's"

Thanks for the compliment on the station. Ill have to post some pics of the pimp wagon on here soon.In my opinion, I have one of the best staffs a PD could ask for. Not to mention the support I get from people like Will Calder, Kris Henderson, Richard " the Mixshow Whore" Dalton, John Parker, Mike and Jon.

Tony I apologize for not coming back to talk to you. I was dealing with some personal issues this week, that I wasn't ready for, plus the back of my cellphone fell off and never found it.

Egos are fine because I think in some ways we all have them. But to come in and demand to be first, when in reality you are not helping the cause, thats just being an ass.

Things happen...I totally understand.

I did see you a couple of times outside after that initial "meet", but I didn't want to bother you. There's next year though :) and the WMC, which I WILL attend. Since people have been telling me that the coalition has actually become "part" of the industry so-to-speak, then I should start going to these industry events. :)

Thank you
