Now, if we can get bands like My Morning Jacket, National and Josh Ritter on the air, then i'll listen :)

Gee whiz jeffdfw, that's a playlist from an ALTERNATIVE station! I haven't heard one of those in a looooong time. How I wish that Houston's "Buzz" sounded like that again. Is there much overlap between KEGL and KDGE now?

The Edge is sounding better. It would be nice to hear a bit more diversity in the playlist. For example, more plays from bands like Modest Mouse, The Shins, Cold War Kids, Interpol, Radiohead, Spoon, would probably be well accepted. A slight shift in that direction would also help separate the playlists so their isn't as much musical crossover with The Eagle.

My thoughts exactly. The bands you mentioned are true alternative. The Edge still skews too much towards Active Rock for my taste.

It'd be nice to hear an alternative station that actually plays real alternative in their gold category. Bands like:

Psychedelic Furs
English Beat
Fischer Zed
Romeo Void
The Clash - something other than Combat Rock-era.
PiL
Ramones
Jim Carroll
Robyn Hitchcock
Echo & The Bunnymen
The Specials
U2 - Pre-Unforgettable Fire
The Police
The Jam
The Damned
Thomas Dolby
The Cult - anything before Electric
Billy Bragg
Red Lorry Yellow Lorry
Bauhaus

...and probably 35 other important artists that had amazing alternative tracks that would appeal to the upper demo.

Alternative radio has this notion that the format started with grunge. It believes Foo Fighters and Coldplay are somehow alternative artists. It ignores what truly made alternative special. And that was a multiple-textured format that could put Soho next to Sex Pistols and make it work. It ignores the heritage of U2, who should be THE primary core artist. Anything from Boy, October, War, Under & Blood Red Sky...All qualify as the Metallica of their format. Or the Led Zeppelin. Throw in Secret Journey or anything from Ghost In The Machine. Anyone remember Thompson Twins? Yeah, they had some hits. I truly believe Alternative misses the boat, especially on the upper end, by not really knowing from where it came.

And this is where we hear "none of those songs test."

I know. But it doesn't mean they're not good. And did anyone consider that it doesn't test because they aren't played? How many people know who does "Never Been Any Reason?" or "Rosalie?" But you like them when they roll by. Bad news. Bullet For my Valentine & H.I.M. aren't alternative. Neither are Feist or Gnarls Barkley.

Now Einsturzende Neubauten...perhaps a little too far out of the way.

The point being, Alternative has so much more music to pick from. It's a far better format than it has ever shown nationally. I thank Oedipus for expanding my musical horizons in the 70's & 80's. There was a time when even straight forward Rock stations went off the beaten path. Imagine how cool it would be to hear "One Of Our Submarines" next to that Hives song.

I wish.

In a way they were. What you, and most people, miss out on for that matter is that alternative has changed over the years. The only problem is that radio has as well. Unfortunately when CC killed EGL, they killed the DGE as well morphing it into the hybrid pish posh it is now. Can they fix it? I doubt it.

I grew up listening to bands like The Cure, Depeche Mode, Echo and the Bunnymen, R.E.M., The Church...etc. There isn't a station in D/FW that really covers that style of music.

I know 102.9 and Jack play the biggest hit song for each of those bands, but it would be nice to have a station around here that dug a little deeper.

So basically a station that is a mix between Ethel, Lucy, and Fred on XM?

Yeah, that is about right. I guess the analysts and consultants believe that the majority of rock fans like either hard rock or classic rock in D/FW. Who knows, maybe they are right. I really do need to break down and get satellite radio.

WWCD from Columbus, OH and WFNX from Boston cover that ground quite well. A station like that would sure be a breath of fresh air around here.
