Now They're Killing Country

They do them because people watch them, and because the artists willingly participate.

I thought of this thread as I watched the People's Choice Country Awards, and saw a guy named Jelly Roll win three awards. He had previously been a rapper and alternative artist, but he knew he could reach more people in country. Is it traditional country? No. It's very rock influenced. But obviously people like it.

In other words: Cheap, unscripted, content with talent that shows up for free at the possibility of getting some award.

Yeah, that's the new one I saw promoted the other day. Even my wife looked up from her iPad and said "what, another stupid country music awards show??"

I didn't see the overnights on it, so not sure how it did.

His music was also considered too pop for the Opry. The use of steel guitar wasn't accepted at the time. They didn't allow drums on the Opry stage. Hank's wife Audrey did a lot to change his image after his death. She was the one who got others to record his songs and get him inducted in the Hall of Fame. Those things didn't happen by accident. There's a campaign to have his membership in the Opry reinstated in the 100th anniversary of his birth. Not everyone is on board with this.
Just as with the other "awards" lots of politics and behind-the-scenes efforts are involved.

The ultimate insult is yet to come when Taylor Swift and the rap genre are voted in to the HOF.

Sure, Jan.

As they should be. There are groundbreaking rappers who have done amazing, powerful work. The music speaks to an audience you choose not to grasp, and to demean. And given her success as a songwriter and performer, hell yes Taylor Swift would be a future hall of famer.

Taylor was 13 when her first single came out. In 1971, another 13 year old released her debut single. At the time, a lot of country traditionalists felt she was too young to sing country music. This year she will be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Her name is Tanya Tucker.

this thread is nothing but classic "I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was, now what i'm with isn't it and what's it seems weird and scary to me, it will happen to you" complain post about the sound of Country no longer being the it that the OP of this thread that they used to be with.
You can look at it that way or you can see the lack of innovation, professional use of genuine musical instruments, variety of subject matter and terrible repetitive lyrics.

OTOH, I'm unsure I totally understood what you wrote. I ran out of breath halfway through and your sentence/paragraph broke a ton of English language rules.

As many people have already posted.....the various HOF's tend to be nothing more than popularity polls. Except for people in the industry whose livelihoods depend upon them they serve no real purpose.

An editorial on the "pop country" debate. From 1956. It's a debate as old as the format itself.

When Elvis came along there were two basic complaints:

1. His music was taken to be a rip off of previous R&B (or Black) songs.
2. His on-stage histrionics were seen as debauchery by a mostly White audience. This was obviously the BIG criticism.

Same thing happened when music video's came out. The music itself slowly became second rate and, in fact, doesn't exist any longer. It's all about the video. Thank you Buggles. Video has now been enhanced by streaming and stage shows and most of the rock and pop music is now background noise.

My original post simply compared the demise of Country to the previous pop/rock collapse.

Your mileage may differ.

Singer/songwriter Hardy is a frequent collaborator with country music's top current star, Morgan Wallen. Do they go far outside the narrow country "tradition" Landtuna laments. Well, yes, that's part of what makes them popular. But both respect the old ways and have recorded songs that reflect that respect. Here's Hardy imagining a world without country music:

And here's Wallen using a guitar lick straight out of Waylon Jennings, and quoting a Gregg Allman lyric as well, on one of his two current hits. This is the one that appeals to "traditional" country fans. The other is called "Thinking of Me" and is very much a "trap" track. I won't link to it here because I don't think Tuna would care for it.

This what country music is today. It's all over the place, with something for just about everyone in demographics this genre has never reached before. If this is a "demise," where do I sign up for one of my own?
