Dylan's Hanson Joke Cuts It Close
Local fans of the '90s pop phenom from TULSA known as HANSON were thrown for a loop last night while listening to RENDA Top 40 KHTT (106.9 K-HITS) night jock DYLAN. Sounding concerned, he cracked the mic at 6:10p, saying he had gotten an e-mail, and asked his audience to "keep the HANSON family in your thoughts and prayers," which resulted in jammed station phone lines.

Then, around 6:30p, saying he couldn't read the entire email without first getting an official OK from the family, he told listeners that the story involved a razor and one of the band members. By 6:50p, with listeners frantic to learn what was going on, DYLAN hit the air, reading the "official statement":

"This afternoon around 4p, ZACK HANSON reached puberty and cut his chin during his first attempt to shave" (insert rimshot here).

No word on whether or not the citizenry were planning to assemble a lynch mob.

Hmmmmm. If you call centering the "bit" around a boy band that was annoying as sin and only popular with pre-pubescent girls six years ago "good radio," then I suppose it was such.

I don't care if they ARE from the Tulsa area, the relevance value of the bit was probably a two out of five.

Gary, seriously.. how large of a portion of the KHTT audience heard the "bit" and either tuned out or didn't really care enough to listen with their undivided attention? What was the payoff to the majority of the audience?

And don't go quoting the Net News piece about "jammed phone lines," either, because you know as well as I do that any jock will say just about anything to get their name on that website.

Ok, first off...I've got to give this kid (never met him) kudos for trying to think out side of the vanilla box. If nothing else, he seems to have passion, imagination and at least some sense of adventure. For that, I give him props. He's obviously not lazy and probably loves his job.

Anyone who loves radio like that gets a high-five from me regardless of how many Dan O'day or R&R seminars he's been to.

Secondly, any great PD will tell you that NO WHERE is it written that EVERY SINGLE bit has to hit EVERY listener between the eyes with "5 out of 5."

Some things you just do on occasion (especially in CHR) because they're fun. Let's not overthink our way out of a great radio show.

Is there a place for analysis and introspect with our shows? ABSOLUTELY. We need to be constantly airchecking ourselves, trying to improve and getting feedback from those who have proven themselves as coaches.

In my opinion, this was a great bit. Clever. Well thought out. And if he exectuted it as the news bit says he did, it would generate phones in the hometown of these guys. In another market...probably not the best idea. But Tulsa is well aware of these guys. Tulsa claims these guys as it's own. And Tulsa is proud of these boys. My teenage sister-in-law still loves them, although she won't admit it to anyone cool. I suppose I should take it as an insult from her that she has told me about her continued loyalty to them.

Bottom line: My opinion is that even if there weren't 5 out of 5 of your criteria hit, this bit was a good fit for this market. In addition, I'm hard pressed to remember the last show I (or anyone I know) did when every single bit scored 5 out of 5. Remember that hitting every criteria doesn't necessarily make a bit a success. In the same way, not hitting every criteria doesn't even come close to making a bit a failure.

The criteria are there as general guidlines. Not as Gods.

I know you guys are talking about music radio here, but I spent this morning listening to WOAI in San Antonio. It was just great. No politics, no bashing each others (political) teeth in, no slamming of local leaders. It was a relief. I realize it was Saturday morning, but my gosh it was such a nice listen.
The talent had great voices and the overall sound was fabulous. I hadn't really listened to OAI in decades, but I'll tune them in more often now, until the pattern change anyway.

Have a great weekend.

kmox in st louis is like that too. same with whas in louisville

there aren't many anymore still doing good solid full service radio

Don't be bitter because you didn't think of it first.

You're right, I didn't - and wouldn't - think of it first. I wouldn't think of being so irrelevant to 2006 rather than 2000 in a piece of on-air content.

Wow... apparently you don't know how big Hanson STILL IS in Tulsa w/ that demo for K-Hits! I was at a little coffee shop the other night in town when 2 of them walked in and they almost immediatly had to leave b/c people wouldn't leave them alone! Less than 2 years ago they sold out Cains two nights in a row in a matter of hours! Hanson (no matter how lame I think they are) are still HUGE in Tulsa... Not really that irrelevant... Good job for the K-Hits Jock!

How about local? The Khits jock did a bit that could only be appreciated in his city...that my friend is GREAT radio.

Thanks, Gary for pointing out original, good radio. It's nice to hear someone being creative instead of the usual cookie cutter radio.

This is a lot better radio than the AT40 board op'ing shuckzyo does.

I agree...kudos indeed for not justing giving, artisit title and time. Way to actually put some entertainment back into radio. Even if you thought the bit was in poor taste it at least got you thinking and probably laughing.

Not really that compelling.

I'm in the demo and live in Tulsa. Any fan who actually knows anything about Hanson would know that Zack is 21 years old (past his first shaving experience I'm sure) and their only song that charted was released in the Spring of 1997 (almost 10 years ago).

9 out of 10 of my friends who used to be huge fans have long since stopped caring much about Hanson for the most part.

I hope you don't ever have a terrible E-mail from a local family you really need to read on the air (remember the little boy who cried 'Wolf'?). We will not wait around for it.

Not really that compelling.

.

Okay, okay...here's the correct way it should have been done........

"106.9 Khits, that was (song & artist). It's (time & temp), I'm (jock) with more music next on Khits."

Did I leave anything out?

Oh, wow, another "so and so is nothing but a board op" insult. That's amazing.

But, then again, it's coming from the same person that thought it was compelling to do a bit about a Hanson brother and shaving.

I hear the ticket sales for that big concert are just going oh so well, D.E.
