"WAL-MART STORES INC. and the HD DIGITAL RADIO ALLIANCE announced that
HD digital radio receivers are launching today in 1,989 WAL-MART
stores in 85 markets. WAL-MART will initially stock the JVC HD-W10
Mobile HD Radio receiver, which will retail for less than $190. The
store has also created a variety of programs and educational tools
around HD RADIO. "

Love 'em or heat 'em, this is the "big one"...the one people like 700 said would never happen (remember that???). Well it's happened. In fact, that's a pretty good judge. If detractors here say there will never be HD portables, expect 'em soon. IF they say HD is "dead", look for new stations/formats/products. If they say they will "never be widely available", look for 'em at Wal Mart. And if they say "nobody's interested"...well let's hope they say that...QUICKLY, because it would seem to be a guarantee of immediate success!

Hey Mr. Walker: Have you ever been in your local Wal-mart and taken a look at the display's for satellite radios? The Wal-mart in my city always and I mean always has shopping carts filled with items for restocking in front of both the Sirius and XM displays and the store employees tear your head off if you try to move them out of the way. I will be impressed when there is an HD radio tuner in every radio wal-mart sells. To bad that will take another ten years at the least to happen.

"How many HD radios have actually been sold?"

"It's to argue that doing more of what achieved these kinds of results will not likely achieve results different from these. It will take a wholesale re-evaluation of the HD radio effort to right this ship on the bumpy ocean of consumer preference."

Unavailability of HD radios is not the problem - the problem is lack of consumer interest:

Yes, let's examine how many HD radios have actually been sold, BEFORE they actually to on sale at the world's largest retailer.

And the satellite radio display works fine at my Wal Mart. The argument that merchandise doesn't sell at Wal Mart stores ain't going very far. I'd wager Wal Mart has sold more satellite radios than Circuit City, Best Buy, and Radio Shack combined.

Let's check out the number of consumer votes for HD Radio, for Circiut City's Big HD Radio Rollout:

Check out the number of Accurian reviews at the Radio Shack site. Quite a few, Dude.

I was at our local Circuit City this weekend and, guess what?, no HD Radios on display. Satellite radio, of course.

And here we have the problem big box retailers like CC and Wal-mart face. HD-Radio has nearly zero digital radio recognition factor with Joe (or is it Jose?) Lunchbox. It lost it to satellite. The number of products for XM and Sirius is so large and the in-store displays so flashy that there is no way a wimpy Accurian radio sitting on a shelf with a bunch of other equipment is going to compete. And, yes, there were many people, most of them young, checking out the XM and Sirius displays.

The only recourse is to make HD-R standard equipment in new cars and as a defacto standard in surround sound stereo systems for the home. I did notice that several Joe Lunchbox-types were buying surround sound systems, sub-woofers and all, to compliment their LCD (or plasma) TV purchases. This would have been the perfect venue for HD-Radio or similar digital radio technology.

But like so much else surrounding the "great HD-Radio rollout", it's another missed opportunity.

Contrary to popular opinion... Well, contrary to the 5 or 6 HD bashers that post regularly on this board anyway, not everyone uses the internet to post product reviews. Shocking? Yes - I know. Obvious? To most people, probably.

The first product that comes up if you click the big satellite radio button on the Radio Shack homepage is a radio from Sirius - the Stiletto something... It's managed 5 reviews.

The second Sirius product, another Stiletto unit - zero reviews.

The Sirius Sportster 4 - a whopping 6 reviews.

Wow... The only thing I can conclude from this is there must be zero interest in Sirius satellite radio - after all, HARDLY ANYONE IS REVIEWING THEIR PRODUCTS ON THE RADIO SHACK WEBSITE!!!

You notice the same thing looking at different product categories - I checked laptop computers and pulled up one of the least expensive models they stock - a $699 Acer. Sadly, it also has zero reviews. Another laptop - one of their "customer top-rated" models has 6 reviews! Apparently there is no interest in laptop computers!

The Playstation 3 also has zero reviews. Those shots of people standing outside stores in the dead of winter to buy them must have been faked.
