Now's the chance!

Assuming Lite FM will remain all Christmas until the end of the season, now is CBS's chance (or anyone else for that matter) to flip to AC!

It would be a perfect time. Lite FM listeners and offices that don't want to hear Christmas music would switch over to this station. It's too obvious and would be stupid not to. CBS has three dogs in town and if they flipped one of their stations to AC, they may now only have two dogs! LOL

I know we've recently discussed this, but now with Lite FM all Christmas, it would be a perfect time for a flip to AC.

Kevin, I'm not sure any station in any market has ever done this. It would be worth seeing what happened. I truly do believe however that A/C's target....females want once this time of the year hits is Christmas music. Not all women...but most. The reason why many stations flip before Thanksgiving is to get more Arbitron credit since if you wait til the day after Thanksgiving, it'll be less than three weeks until the book ends.

I have friends who work at A/C stations and they told me they began receiving e-mails about when Christmas would start before Halloween.

Back to your original thought....if CBS flipped a station to A/C. it would need to play a very heavy dose of holiday tunes as well if it wanted to have the chance to compete.

No doubt that Christmas music is big but in New York there is an absolutely huge non Christian population that also listens to LITE. Another choice is not a bad idea. With Delilah coming to WLTW in the evening I presume even those loyal LITE listeners would consider changing the dial and another ac isn't a bad idea. WLTW does so well only because there is no competition.
This might infact be the time to do. They could get a jump start on the non Christian listeners who will flip the dial on LITE once the Xmas music comes on by default. Also you cannot tell me that most people like to listen to 3 weeks of non stop Xmas music 24hrs. a day.
It's just overkill!

A new A/C station in NYC would be an uphill climb, to say the least. It's unfortunate to see veteran jocks let go, and Delilah coming into evenings...but get used to it.

Lite is so entrenched as an at work listen, it would take a long time and a lot of promotion to make a dent. It is a background station anyway...the jocks are just not that important...sorry to say.

As far as Delilah goes, it is supposed to be customized to a certain extent for NY. Maybe fewer jingles/imaging, maybe fewer hokey dedications...who knows. The folks at Lite will find a way to make it work.

Jeffrey,

Yes..three solid weeks (or more) seems like overkill. But in what I've read or been told, there is no proof that shows beginning Christmas music as early as this weekend has hurt A/C radio stations in the ratings. In fact, the opposite has proven to be true. That's why stations continue to do this year after year.

For reason's beyond explaination, except to say they are "beautiful songs" many non-Christians actually adore Christmas carols/music. Some of the finest Christmas albums and versions are performed by non-Christians as well. Most stations that switch to Christmas, see a bump in the ratings, sometimes a substantial one.
