NPR taking lessons from ibiquity?

Riding the HD Radio coat tails
Chriss Scherer November 28th, 2008

On Nov. 28, 2008, NPR held a National Day of Listening that was highlighted by a special series that ran Nov. 22 to Nov. 28. The series, which NPR created in partnership with Story Corps, featured interviews of 10 popular NPR hosts, correspondents and commentators with their own friends and family.

Sounds interesting, doesn’t it? The series was carried on NPR affiliates across the country, and the segments were also posted online. I know some listeners found it to be compelling, interesting content.

What I found strange is that I received a press release about the series under a thin HD Radio veil. The release said, “Experience the first ever National Day of Listening on National Public Radio member stations [on] November 28, broadcasting in crystal-clear sound — only with HD Radio.”

"Broadcasting in crystal-clear sound - only with HD Radio" ??

Are we to assume from NPR's choice of words that their analog signals sound like crap? ;D

How about some "crystal-clear writing," NPR?

Boy are you guys the bitter old men... :)

Isn't this really a little like "Watch the Cowboys take on the Eagles this Sunday in Crystal Clear High Definition, Only on KRIS-TV CH 6.1?"

Should we assume KRIS-TV Channel "6" will be running "Wheel of Fortune?"

Or just that their analog station looks like crap?

With all there is to complain about with HD radio, ISTM this kind of silliness just raises the noise floor and tends to get even legitimate criticism of the system grouped in with "Kooks". Of course that's just MY opinion. :)

Back it down a few notches, Inspector. I was just joshing. Actually: I was taking aim at NPR's writing, not even at HD Radio! (Because of the so-called "negative-pregnant" in their press release which seemed to declare that "crystal-clear" sound was ONLY available in the HD flavor, n'est-ce pas? I'm sure that wasn't what they meant to say, but it was how it read.)

Did you have a nice Thanksgiving? Hopefully you're not a Bills fan??

It's more misleading advertising just like ibiquity does all the time, this was pointed out by an editor and former chief engineer of several well known stations who actually does not seem anti-IBOC, just anti-misleading advertising:

Chriss Scherer went on to say:

"What I found strange is that I received a press release about the series under a thin HD Radio veil. The release said, “Experience the first ever National Day of Listening on National Public Radio member stations [on] November 28, broadcasting in crystal-clear sound — only with HD Radio.”

It appeared that the series was only available to listeners with HD Radio receivers. As an effort to promote HD Radio, this is an ideal way to encourage listeners to obtain receivers with the technology. But as I read more I realized that HD Radio had nothing to do with the series. I asked a PR rep from the source of the press release, and I was told:

“With NPR’s National Day of Listening, we’re highlighting some of the most compelling programming on the radio today and we’re saying that there is no better way to listen to these multigenerational stories from across the country than in crystal-clear HD Radio quality. It’s a reminder to folks of the improved sound quality of HD Radio broadcasts and the many great receivers available on the market.”

Etc.

Re: NPR taking lessons from ibiquity And the rest of the story

So the series has nothing to do with HD Radio. “This series will be broadcast on NPR’s primary stations, not multicast stations.”

Make the content exclusive to HD Radio and not a tag-along to other forms of media.

The real question here is how does NPR satisfy two masters? It’s like having two wives,
one who’s loved, and has been loyal through the years and another who’s young and exciting, but uncertain. NPR chose to gamble their programming goldmine with the old ball & chain.. lol

Yeah Yeah Yeah. :)

No way baby. We be TEXANS fans in our house. And us 4-7 Texans showed then 4-7 Jaguars who's the best of the rest. (Make that 5-7 and 4-8) Saw it all. In 45 degree whether. Stadium roof open due to damage from Hurricane IKE. Don't they know us SOUTH Texans will freeze to death under 50. Damn. I spent the second half with just my golf shirt and the promo Tee. (Had to give my jacket to the MRS cuz her legs were cold. I'm such a nice guy) :) God, we love indoor football.
I just made believe I was back at Franklin Field in the upper deck in December and I felt almost warm. I can move here and root for the local team (Houston). As a former Philadelphian, I'd die before I'd root for the Cowgirls (boys).

No wonder we got so many calls when I was on the morning show. :)
