WFMU, Jersey City is a free-form non-commercial FM station (and not an NPR member).

Brilliance In Bumps And Bruises, On Air And On Screen

A new documentary about WFMU, the scrappy, chaotic and iconoclastic radio station in New Jersey, debuts today at the DOC NYC film festival. Sex and Broadcasting is described by the filmmakers as "an American tale of life, liberty and independent radio." In an opening scene, station manager Ken Freedman is on the air and delivers what amounts to a manifesto.

It's a great story. This message board is filled with complaints from people about radio stations and radio owners, asking why those owners don't program their stations certain ways. This is a station that doesn't depend on someone else to pay the bills. It's owned and paid for by the listeners. There are hundreds, maybe thousands of radio stations in financial trouble in this country. They could by easily bought by similar groups like this one, dedicated to music and radio. All it takes is dedication, and that's what these people have.
